Melamine dinner sets

Hi All
have been looking for a while for some strong lightweight pasta bowls for our Moho
we bought a melamine set when we started last year, which are fine except 2 of the 4 mugs seemed to have sprung a leak

so we are now looking for another decent set, preferably with Pasta bowls ( we eat a lot of pasta)
not having much luck online, unless you want flowery bowls or other such busy stuff.

where do peeps get theirs from ?

We have two ceramic bowls but keep them separate by a piece of paper towel. We also only have ceramic coffee mugs

Worth looking at Ikea's Oftast stuff. It's a tempered glass, equivalent to the Correlle above. Seems reasonably indestructible, but to be sure I just have a layer of the antislip rubbery shelf matting stuff between plates and things when they are stacked away.

Ikea do a couple of tempered glass ranges, similar to Corelle but about a quarter of the price.

Got ours from the middle isle of you know where. Just have to wait for them to come in.

Blacks/Millets have a few sets of melamine, they do one by Eurohike called geo triangles if you wanted a more modern pattern. Cheap too but I just had a look and the bowls are currently out of stock.

The current melamine stuff appears to be very poor quality compared to the older stuff. We are using melamine plates and bowels we have had since about 1990 only recently started to get more scratches on them since we got some much sharper knives.
All the newer stuff we have seen I don't reckon will last. For drinks we use bone china mugs.

I agree.
Melamine is extremely practical (light, robust and a very low heat capacity = no need to warm them up).
Avoid it for cups/mugs, though: They stain very easily if you're a tea-drinker but, if appearance does not matter, just as functional.

Why not just get new 'normal' mugs (ie not melamine) and keep the bowls you have? I have some lovely vintage Pyrex mugs that double up as glasses and stack without clinking:

Changed all our Melamine to Correlle.
Didn't like placing hot food on Melamine.
Correlle is not cheap, but is more like eating off china plates than the plastic feel of Melamine.

Our 30 year old melamine is fine but the quality is totally different to the modern stuff.

Bought our melamine of Townshend Thoresen ferries when they closed at Felixstowe in the 80's everything bar the cups are still going strong. The cups don't like boiling water and developed cracks so we now use China cups.

Seriously, those are its two greatest advantages! You cannot compare melamine to corelle, sorry. It is expensive for a reason and in a different league to eat from.

I don't think Corelle is as light as melamine nor will it be as unbreakable, but it will undoubtedly look nicer, if that improves your enjoyment of your food then that's fine.

Another vote for Corelle. Nice quality feel but lighter/thinner than ‘normal’ crocks. A close relative of Pyrex, I think. Very durable and break resistant.(don’t ask.)

I’ve seen a massive stack of Corelle knocked over at the NEC show, on to the floor. Not a single broken item.
We then bought a set.

I’ve come to learn you but cheap you buy twice however camper stuff isn’t blooming cheap is it! I’ve had bamboo and melamine and hate them. I’ll be replacing with corelle. Same as kettles ! Brought 2 ‘camping kettles’ in 5 years and they were not cheap. Invested in a le cruset posh un and it’ll last years and lighter weight model. I’ve realised camper stuff is not worth it’s money and we’re talking tiny bit of weight payload wise.

We use stuff similar to corelle, not quite as lightweight as melamine, but I don't need to worry about nasties leaching into my food. I have dropped one from the top shelf in the van it hit the floor then bounced outside onto hardstanding, not a mark on it. I did look at bamboo, but it seems also to have melamine in it so gave it a miss. use china mugs and glass 'stemless wineglasses' for just about everything else.

I got Emma Bridgewater melamine ... really like it.

Been using melamine since 2008; mugs don't bounce off tiled floors. We occasionally use denture cleaning tablets in the mugs, not perfect results but does lighten the insides a bit.
Don't use boiling water? I didn't know that, I've been pouring boiling water into ours and boiling water in them in the microwave! The mugs seem happy enough, so I won't tell them.
Bamboo? Must investigate, as our melamine is starting to look a bit tired.
