I've thought long and hard over this one , as i'm not sure whether it was or not . But i've decided to flag it for others .

Basically i received an email from Pc world / Currys , yesterday . Informing me a problem had arisen regarding the extended warranty of my new computer , it then went on to list a specific model . It explained my credit card had been declined for some reason not listed , and would i re enter my details . Now this email had the full superstore logo , and even had what looked like a genuine email address . Interestingly it even had my full name , which i don't use on my email address ! .

However , it did have a couple of small issues . First off , i haven't brought a new computer from anywhere , recently . Even if i had , i wouldn't have taken the extended warranty anyway , and i certainly wouldn't have payed with a credit card . Now the last point could be argued , as some places state all cards as credit cards , but as such i don't have an actual credit card .

Now this may , or may not have been a genuine email and a mistake . But i treated it the same as any dodgy email i receive , binned . Regretfully i junked and reported it , without thinking , so i can't produce a screenshot .

Just a heads up in case , okay guy's .

If you haven't bought a new computer the scam has failed at it's first hurdle.

I've had a few lately , receipts for items i've not bought , delivery details for non existent items . I'm very active on ebay right now .

Sounds like a scam, they’re getting more sophisticated sadly

That's the thing , i ent sure . It could be genuine , they used my full name , it would take a fail bit of research to find that . On the other hand i have bought a computer from them in the past , but we are talking 8 years or more .

My feeling is fore-warned , is fore-armed , that's why i red flagged it

Have you contacted Currys/PC World to tell them as it may be a security breach at their end and their databases might have been hacked?

Whenever I get emails texts phone calls like that, I contact the company concerned directly, never via links. Virtually always a scam. If not you can set it up directly.
Just another small thing. When I sell on Facebook marketplace, I never give out my address until the buyer is ready to inspect. If asked where is the item I only say the first part of my postcode. So many scumbags out there.

Same goes for extended warranties :imoutahere:
A couple of years ago, while on holiday I broke my wristwatch. Although I had others at home I bought a quick replacement at Argos for the princely sum of £5.

I was then asked if I wanted the extended warranty on it for only £4. When I pointed out the initial cost of the watch the member of staff said, “Well, I have to ask”.

Very good point , in short no . I'll arrange that tomorrow , trouble is i've already reported it to my email provider so the actual email has gone .

Yep , i'm extremely careful with personal information myself , even on this site , just take a look at my profile . I dont class any site as fully secure , and this computer holds no personal information . When it's shut down , it always goes completely offline , so outside access is impossible . I use an online banking system for almost everything else , they do hold personal information , and though i doubt are totally secure , being a bank will be about as secure as you can get . Another thing is i never use my real date of birth anywhere . My age is correct , just the date is wrong .

“Well, I have to ask”.

Yes they do , it's often managemental . I won't as a matter of course .
My first mobile phone was a gsm , vehicle based thing back in the early 90's . It was insured up to the hilt , yet when it failed , they refused to pay for it . It was mounted in my truck , but unknown to me , the windscreen leaked , and the water leeched down onto the phone hardware . It was quite a high tech phone , and the whole phone control gear needed replacement at 500 quid . I went mad and cancelled the lot instantly , they threatened me with breach of contract , and i said see you in court . I've never bothered with insurance since . Still got the dam thing somewhere , but i never did have my day in court , they went bust .

No reputable firm will ask you to click on a link in an email.

Ahhhh , yes your quite correct , and there was a link . Settled .
