Hi all, we want to go to a larger MH (7.4metre ours 6,8metre) and are looking at a Hymer with 30K on clock with auto gearbox, what should we be asking from your valid experiences.

Why do you have major concerns 🤔 or are you asking if we think you should have them?

We have A class Hymer built on a 2005 Mercedes chassis, never can recall the number but it has a four wheel rear axle and full auto box not sprint shift. 3 litre 6 cylinder

We bought it low mileage 2K in 2013 four years after registered

The only issue we have had was a turbo failure after two years, 15K miles, put down to probable low use but never qualified

Don’t expect mpg above high teens and you shouldn’t be disappointed, they are quiet and smooth.

Suspension is a bit wallowy at low speed especially, E&P jacks stopped rocking when parked and full air suspension on the back has helped a bit

As David said, would be helpful to have more info as to the model. The auto Hymer's pre 2006-7 mostly had Sprintshift rather than a full auto but a few did have the full auto, especially the high end S models. The Sprintshift can be a problem when it goes wrong ( like the comformatic on the Fiats) and because of this I was wary about buying one and went with the manual on the 2.7L engine. I think the recent Merc Hymer's have had the full auto box (8 speed?) which has a good reputation.

Not a lot…. Good engine, great gearbox (proper 7sp auto) and reasonable miles

Never counted mine , but when you force up or down manually it only goes to 4 then D, so think ours is 5 speed 👍
Yes, I think that the 7 speed came in about 2011 or thereabouts. My 2009 car was five but the next one was 7

Oh…. And if it is the “proper” auto then it should have cruise/speed limiter as standard. On a 3 litre it will not be a sprintshift

Hi, sorry we are currently in Spain and with little data. I was thinking of something in the 2018+ age and 7.4metres long, We currently have a Weinsberg compact Pepper but find it lacking in space for 2 plus dog on long haul trips. Thank you all for your support.

The Hymer Equivalent of your Weinsberg Pepper is the MLT 570 (6.7m) there is also a MLT 580 which is the next size up at 6.9m.
The UK models are all over 3500kg, so you need a C1 licence.

Having seen Weinsbergs at shows I've been impressed with the build quality, be be careful that you are not spending a lot of money to effectively downgrade.

Unless J the Dog is a large breed, I'd have thought anything upto Labrador size would be fine with two people in a 6.7m motorhome.

We rented several motorhomes, around the 8m area.
When we came to buy ours we put a strict limit of 6.99m, as in the UK that is about the maximum size for easy manoeuvrability, and is basically the same size as the LWB delivery vans.

I agree if most of your motoring is on the mainland, then size is less of a consideration.

Our 2019 ML-T 570 was rated at 3500kg when new. We have just up plated to 4200kg with rear air suspension. We have a Kerry Blue terrier and space is fine, but I think a Labrador might be a bit on the large side.......

I think you should be asking for a full Mercedes service history.

I seem to remember you having an expensive engine problem David some years ago, or is it my age playing tricks🤣
Back to OP you should not go far wrong with a Mercedes unless your really unlucky👍

I did declare the turbo, a fairly simple job on a sprinter turned into a gearbox out £5K job on our A class 🙄

That was 2016/7 your memory isn’t too bad 😁👍
