Just fitted a leather steering wheel cover. The van has standard steering wheel and I just found it a bit , well, plasticky… after consulting the oracle of MHF I went for a sew-on 16 quid affair that I thought’ if its crap I’ll get of it’.
Well, I’m amazed , its not too much of a pffaff to put on if you follow the instructions and the effect is amazing. Its not just for show it genuinely feels better to drive the van now ( I know its all in my head) and I think it looks great too.
Would suggest getting one with the black twine not the coloured, it is more forgiving if you make a mistake sewing it on.
Can recommend one if you fancy a cheap ‘upgrade’, thanks to funsters for pointing me in the right direction.

Lovely job. Did a similar thing to cover my ancient old 'sticky' 1963 Landrover steering wheel which did the trick but was actually laced up rather than neatly sewn as yours is. Looks very neat and professional!

Thanks, it took me about 1 1/2 hours but definitely worth it, its ridiculous that it feels so different!

Hi there uzsnowdrop
Can you give us a link for the steering wheel cover please

Pwilmo, heres a pic from ebay.
If you get one heres some tips…
Try and get the cover perfectly centred ( join at bottom centre) first time, trying to move it after youve stretched it on is a bugger, its very tight. ( this makes it feel great later)
When it arrives dont be disappointed it doesnt look much in the bag
Theres more than enough twine supplied
Have a cup of coffee while you are doing it sewing seems either boring or very mindful depending on your view
Get black twine, its very forgiving, the blue and red show small errors
Position the cover evenly all round .
Theres a good you tube clip showing how I’ll try and find it
They talk about doing the knots on the inside edge(?you’ll see what I mean) but I got bored and did a couple outside, they dont show at all.
Finally, dont put the needle in your shorts pocket for safe keeping , forget its there and stab yourself in the bits…..😧

Hope this link works.
It shows how to stitch ( very clear)but the guy then eases the cover into position by twisting it, I wouldnt suggest that as it goes on supertight

I wonder if its possible to get the chrome rings that the Fiat Factory leather wheel has, that would really finish it off.
Well done to the OP, great job!(y)

I have no idea how the OP sewed his in around 1.5 hours. Taken me 4 so far (then it got too dark to see), and I've still got most of the largest top section to go.

Fitting it to wheel is tight, it's a bit like fitting a bicycle tyre onto a wheel rim.

Contrary to comment of black thread, coloured threads may be easier to use as you can see where you are going.

Keep on going its well worth it! Send us phots when you finish, to be fair, I did rush it a bit, bet yours is neater!

That looks an interesting project. Maybe I could get managements sewing skills involved. She says I am always fixing things on the motorhome.
Meany years ago my mate had one of the fluffy steering wheel covers fitted to his mini. It was never a tight fit and got worse. I always thought it was dangerous.
