Off to fill up tomorrow in France first time. So we can be prepared and dont look numptys which adaptor do you need. And do you fill up or does the attend

Some LPG fill up points at the supermarkets only open when there is an attendant. They tend to work weekdays 9-3 so be warned about that one.
But the total garages and such like are fill them up yourself with the french adaptor and yet to find one that hasnt been open.
If you are going belgium way, fill up there for at least half the price (as long as you are going to be over there more than a fortnight because of Q14). I paid 28 cents last month.
Bigger ones on motorways (and some smaller ones) have adaptors to borrow if you ask

Can be either attended or self service. I think most of the times I have filled up it has been self service and sometimes you have to ask for them to switch it on.

Be ready for the 'hiss' when you disconnect.

I'd suggest you buy the full Euro set of adapters from Gasit, there are 3 in total. I tend to fill up at the garage in Dover before I go over the channel then just keep them topped up before I go away . I have also installed the myLPG.eu app on my phone from the app store. Whilst its not 100% reliable it generally helps me find an LPG station when I need one.

You put the end of the pump gun into the adapter and pull the trigger on the pump, which causes it to grab the adapter, then you operate the lock on the gun to keep it connected.

As said above, the pump end is unlike the UK version it has a set of lugs that expand into the rim of the adapter as you squeeze the trigger, you then lock it in place before pressing the fill button. Be prepared for a bit of a wait before gas starts to flow, I believe the attendant in the kiosk has to turn on each time.

IMPORTANT

I've had my adaptor unscrew slightly and leak gas due to the weight of the nozzle. I now make sure I fit the nozzle at 120 degrees so that the weight of the nozzle tightens the adaptor

We had a leak in France the first time with the adapter. You really have to tighten it well when you attach it to your inlet.

When I filled there I thought the gun fit was a lot better than the bayonet ones over here. That being said if the op is in the UK at the moment I would fill before going just to feel relaxed. The LPG might be cheaper in other countries but we only have an 11kg refillable so 30 p less a litre would still only be £7 saving from totally empty typically £5 from when we fill so not worth diverting miles for.

When I took an lpg car to Amsterdam for a meeting, in Belgium they had two different nozzles one on each side of the pump and were labelled F and NL, make sure you have the correct adapter for the country!

Are you sure that the 'F' and 'NL' were not for the language of the instructions i.e. Francais and Nederlandsprecht? Both of which are used in Belgium.

This is my story of my first fill of LPG in France a few years ago
pulled up to the pump screwed in the adaptor attached the hose , pressed the button nothing happened other than some French shouted over the tannoy . Removed pump waited for it to reset and reattached pressed the button again nothing other than more French being screamed at me over the tannoy and fists being waived at me from reception . Went through all the moves again and noticed every motorist in the petrol station staring at me , one of them came over and pointed out that I was pressing the emergency cut out button for all the pumps and my green button was around the side .

No, different nozzles, as I found out when I tried to fit the adapter I had. Had to shuffle round to the other side!

As posted by other large dish one, I find the French type a much easier to use compared to the UK version.

Thanks ive got the adaptors just not used in France before and our bottle normally lasts but a longer trip this year and found fridge better on gas so filling up as a precaution.

Just used one in France for the first time as well. Just the same as the UK except the nozzle is much easier to put on.

Your not the only plonker, I did that in Spain. Eventually a nice young lady came and pointed out the correct button.
