Have just had hab check done and been advised battery should have a vent pipe and be in a plastic box.

It’s a Halfords HLB700, description says it is sealed.

Does a sealed battery need to have this done?

Not sure why this hasn’t ever been picked up in previous hab checks we have had done or by the dealer who sold us the MH?

My leisure battery has no vent pipe and is in a wooden box. However it is a sealed battery and that is how it was built from new.

Does the battery have a nipple at each end for a vent pipe?
If it does then unblock one nipple and fit a pipe .
If it doesn't then don't bother trying.
Nothing says it MUST be in a box either.

Batteries are sealed but have venting valves fitted to allow pressure release of gasses if things are going wrong. The vent tubes keep any gas out of the habitation area and avoid any explosion risk from the gas, this doesn’t guarantee that the plates in the battery don’t short out and explode anyway.
The only time they are needed is if there is a problem.
Its worth noting that Transit vehicle batteries are under the drivers seat and have no tubes fitted. I don’t believe Mercedes use them either under the passenger’s feet.
Very much like an airbag really as great to have but hopefully never needed.

HLB700 would have had two red plugs, one at each end. They are to be removed when installed and there should have been two red elbows that fit in same hole. You can then run aquarium tubing through floor etc.....

Don’t know until look when next at storage. Bit difficult to tell from this photo.

Thank you. Don’t recall seeing these, will have to have another look.

When you enlarge the photo you can see the left hand blanking cap is removed & the right hand one is still there.

My mark 7 2007 does? I connected the leaisure battery to the same pipe,
All of our work vans are 2015 onwards and they don’t have any. When I fitted a second hab battery last week I could only get the tubes from Banner batteries at Rugeley. All the local motor factors and battery suppliers don’t stock them anymore.
Talking to the guy at Walsall batteries, he said there is little point as they so rarely fail. Not something I am prepared to risk.

Thank you everybody for your help. 👍

My leisure battery under the driver's seat has a vent pipe going through the floor (presumably to outside). The Ducato engine battery does too. However I fitted an additional leisure battery under a habitation seat (behind the driver) and I really don't want to drill a hole in the floor so I am risking it.

From what I can see, that's a re-badged Yuasa L36 EFB which definitely has a vent port each side. One side needs to be piped outside.

The vent stops the battery expanding and exploding if it goes wrong.
Not meaning to frighten you but I’ve seen them when they go pop, really nasty.
If it’s in a battery box vented to the outside no need for tubes.
As long as your charging it as per the spec it will be fine.

Thanks for your comment. Now worried. 😳
It’s just sitting in the cupboard area under the side facing seat behind the passenger seat. Presumably not a vented area hence the hab checker’s advice note. Looks like we’ll have to have a hole made in the floor for a tube. I’ll try and take a photo when we go over later today.
