Just fitted my uprated weight plate and pulled a bucket of dry leaves out of my ducato engine bay - easy enough to get rid of but is this the norm for these can types ?

No! Certainly not. I have never before heard of any Chausson filling the engine bay with leaves. Onions perhaps but not leaves.
