So spent the afternoon wandering the old streets of York, just absorbing the atmosphere & getting the lie of the land...

Time for tea;

IMG_20160608_131725-640x480.jpg

Queue for for cuppa?
You've got to be kidding! Even for a famous one.

But just around the corner :D
No queue...

IMG_20160608_135147-480x640.jpg

A pot of single estate Rwandan tea, strong as you like, with a Betty's 'famous' Yorkshire Fast Rascal scone - yum.

Strolled to the market, off The Shambles for a jar of Harveys Yorkshire Gooseberry preserve, and for this evening a slice of pork & apple homemade terrine & a wedge of "Old York" a ewe's milk cheese :D.
Oh, and a slab of rich fruit cake baked with Wensleydale cheese!

Down to the riverside - what a mess the geese crap makes (n).

Decided to be a real tourist and rest my weary legs;
IMG_20160608_153741-640x480.jpg

A little boat ride up & down the river

Past my temporary home, just peeking through the trees,
IMG_20160608_153516-640x480.jpg

Had to get back to the van, had an appointment, but there was time for one more cuppa (am I rivalling @ianthebuilder for tea consumption today?) and a piece of that cake.

According to my tracker, I've wandered 10 miles today - no wonder I'm pooped .

Parked just around the corner, by the bridge where you can get onto the city walls.
In a one hour parking restricted slot... but still there five hours later!

I think that van must live there - I think it was the same one parked up in that same spot in April

Think it must do, as it was still there this morning [the shoe had gone though].
I wonder if it still runs, its looking a bit unloved.

Back in the van, after another footslogging day.
First order of business was to move my MH about 6 metres - yup, from one pitch to the next one along .
You see I had to make two bookings to get my three nights here... No great hardship though, that's the beauty of MH, just unplug & fire up the motor.

Anyway, today was York Minster day.
I like a good cathedral me.
IMG_20160608_133243-480x640.jpg

So I paid my £10... ticket valid for a year great if you live nearby  and another fiver for the tower 'tour'.
TBH, I was a bit underwhelmed. The whole of the nave has been filled with staging & banked seating for the month long run of the York Mystery Plays - OK fair enough but the rest of the Minster was obstructed or blocked off by all the backstage paraphernalia, making large parts of the building inaccessible and unviewable (n).
Added to that was inevitable obscured areas due to ongoing restoration.
So I wasn't very impressed - I think they should be discounting the ticket price.

So the tower "tour" was no such thing. The man at the bottom took your ticket & said that a way.
275 steps later you emerge into a wire mesh cage with a few small gaps to peer out of.
P1000363-640x360.JPG

Elf n Safety gone mad I tell ya - especially as the outside walkway halfway up was completely unprotected - go figure.
Great views, if restricted;
IMG_20160609_114222-640x480.jpg

But my biggest gripe was that there was no information, no guide. Most of the similar cathedral tower tours I've been on have been very informative eg the Roof Tour of Lincoln's cathedral.
Ah well, it wasn't bad, it just could have been better.
P1000362-640x360.JPG

You'll laugh - whilst I was clambering up those 275 steps, I booked a seat at tonights performance . Must have been the lack of oxygen - so I'm going back in a couple of hours.
I must be bonkers - not only do I not really know what I'm going to see (some religious stuff presumably) but its 3h45min long with only a 15m interval... and no bar!

After all that I took a break at the nearby Treasury House (NT so free entry thanks to my Bermuda card :sneaky:).
A bit of light relief to get away from all that industrial scaffolding & rigging.

P1000369-640x360.JPG

P1000367-640x360.JPG

I then went back to the Minster to "do" the Crypt & the Undercroft .

Well the Mystery Play wasn't such a "mystery" after all :D.
It was a 3h 45min gallop through the bible at breakneck speed, mostly in verse, a couple of songs thrown in.
An epic scale production with a cast of seemed like hundreds, floating planets & a Noah's Ark with elephant's & giraffes .

Just the one furtive foto;
IMG_20160609_210708-640x480.jpg

Got most of the domestic duties done this morning before the heavens opened - its now pouring. Been blessed with mostly sunshine during my stay here in York but I fear I have a Wet Weekend in Whitby to look forward to .

Same here. Too many good fish & chip shops in Whitby to queue for the Magpie.
Mr Chips on Church Street is very good, as is Alexanders on Golden Lion Bank.

No queues for Magpie but I ain't paying £12 for fish'n'chips, no matter how good!
Alexanders was shut & I didn't see a Mr Chips.
I did however have this;

...at the Quayside, quite enough for my softie southern appetite. Very good it was too.
An award winner in 2014 they proudly proclaim, though what relevance that has in 2016 I'm not sure.

So obviously I ventured out into the grey dank murkiness and did the easy walk down into town for a bit of a mooch.
Caught my first glimpse of that Abbey...

IMG_20160610_171630-640x480.jpg

And wandered out to the end of the breakwater, was rewarded by a lone seal popping his head out of the water - no pic because I wasn't quick enough, and it would have been just a grey dot in a grey sea.

Got as far as I could get, so your intrepid explorer turned back in search of sustenance.

IMG_20160610_150454-640x480.jpg

It has to be admitted that there is nothing quite like an English Seaside Resort in the height of the dismal desolation that is a British Summer's Day :D.

[Not such an easy walk back up the hill to Broadings, not used to gradients living in Linc's - that, and being unfit ]

Regards
Stephen.

OMG - I'm cream crackered :hot:

Woke up to gentle rain, easing off. Packed my bag and wandered down the road to catch the bus to Robin Hoods Bay

Did the circuit, not much there really except that bloody hill:
IMG_20160611_103741-640x480.jpg

IMG_20160611_104154-640x480.jpg

So the plan was to walk the 6+ miles ( ) along the cliff top, part of the Cleveland Way.

It was sort of good weather for walking, ie cool, damp, grey but lousy for views.

IMG_20160611_110748-640x480.jpg

Looking back towards Robin Hoods Bay

So what I lost in seeing fabulous views, I gained in appreciating the atmospheric moody landscape & understanding how dangerous the unrelenting grey would be for sailors.

Quite spooky seeing the sea mist bubble up over the cliff & across the moors.

What I also didn't anticipate upon this cliff top walk was how many descents & naturally ascents there'd be...
My Fitbit suggests the equivalent of 96 flights of stairs, my thighs feel every one.

The stone pathways are very pretty but lethal in combination when damp & your boot soles are wet/muddy too

IMG_20160611_120823-640x480.jpg

The Abbey was like a beacon
IMG_20160611_135335-640x480.jpg

...and I'm so glad doing the touristy thing of 199 steps was down, not up!

IMG_20160611_135819-640x480.jpg

IMG_20160611_135901-640x480.jpg

I met a couple of (nearly) local guys, we were doing tortoise & hare, me doing the plodding .
They'd said a pint (or two) in the Duke Of York was a just reward - and it was, and I met up with them there, spent a pleasant hour comparing aching joints & muscles.
They know how to charge for a pint there... £4 for Stella - surprising it was the pub of choice for two Yorkshire folk .
:D.

Needless to say I got a cab back to Broadings, and I ain't budging .

Regards
Stephen

(PS those 6 odd miles actually equalled 7.55 miles with several hundred feet in altitude  )
Not bad for an old, overweight, unfit, asthmatic

Lovely blog thanks!
As a child my grandparents lived in Whitby for a few years so we often went. We would walk the route to robin hoods bay and catch the bus back . Never has a bus journey felt so good! We were kept on our toes as the threat of a missed and only bus made sure there was no slacking!!

I did think about doing that way but wasn't sure about bus times - I'm glad I didn't because 1) I think the most 'undulating' part is nearer RHB & 2) I wouldn't have had the oomph to walk down to (let alone up from) the slipway.

Today it will be mostly...

cloud-clipart-rain-cloud.png

AccuWeather's MinuteCast suggests it will continue raining for another - 43 minutes

(but its been suggesting that for about an he last two hours :cautious:)

Will venture into town this "arvo" rain or no rain.

Sorry @CWH but I won't be doing

having read some TripAdvisor reviews - not even for £3. I don't think I could drink enough to get the "irony".
Just read some of the TA reviews - sounds really, really .... BAD!!! So glad you saved your dosh

Reminds me of that waxworks place that hit the headlines a few years age, with models like this

Well I think that's the Whitby box ticked.
Now back in the van having a cuppa and a "Yorkshire Curd Tart" - yum.

So around noon, just as AccuWeather predicted, the rain tailed off so I walked into town to investigate the side streets I hadn't already seen.
Alexander's was open so as it was lunchtime seemed rude not to;

The haddock was delicious, but not impressed with the chips, the mushy peas a bit meh. All freshly cooked but even though it was cheaper, I preferred the Quayside despite the extra expense.

A step outside I thought why not...

£3 for a 25 min trip out to sea & back in an old lifeboat - retired in 1974, having saved 201 lives.

Not much to see as the mist covered the cliffs and even we didn't go far out, the harbour completely disappeared from view

Wandered up the West Cliff, saw the whale bones & Cook's statue. Down into town & perused the Jet shops, had a "lemon top" whippy icecream - apparently another Whitby special (?), whatever it was yummy. Strolled onto the Tate Hill pier (oldest in the world allegedly, there being a record of a structure since 1190), read about the wreck that 'inspired' Bram Stoker. Stepped onto the sand - just to say I had.
Taxi back up the hill.

Woke up to fog upon the Broadings Fields, very grey & moist.

This mornings entertainment was watching the various campers, tuggers, & tenters trying to dismantle assorted awnings without getting them wetter than they already were And avoiding getting pesky soggy clumps of grass cuttings wrapped up within.

Incidentally I’ve discovered that the Karcher Window Vac is excellent at removing the vast majority of moisture from my external silver screen.

Kudos to the couple opposite in some sort of new VW camper, inflatable awning. Perfect teamwork, no cross words or shouting. Calmness personified.

Anyway, as you can tell, not a lot to report today.
Just relocated to Britstop #751/16 near Barnard Castle where I have a full day tomorrow.

Some road noise, to be expected from the nearby A66
But the view isn't too bad

I'm sure the A171 drive over the moors is quite picturesque but I couldn't see a bloody thing because of the fairly thick fog.

Tea & an attack on the local cakes I seem to have stockpiled over the last couple days.

We did the Captain Cook experience on the Endeavour, while we were in Whitby - it snowed as we set off and the sea was really rough - so much so, I was dreading when the boat had to turn around and come back, being broadside to the waves, and everyone seemed to be nervously looking at the skipper to see if he had a worried look on his face......

Keep having a good time despite the weather! (y)
