Knaus Sun 650MEG

2007
We have a new Knaus Platinum Sun TI 650 and notice when the sun comes and goes the back wall makes a tapping noise as if it’s shrinking and expanding, it last a few minutes then stops until the sun comes or goes.

Get one of these stickers and the problem will stop :giggle:

Check for stowaways.

Apart from making sure you stay in the sun,or permanently in the shade, there’s not a lot you can do!
Look at it this way, you’ve got a free meteorological app built into your motorhome. Don’t tell Knaus, they’ll charge you for it.:LOL:   ;)

The small pleats on the skylights can make a noise like that.
I thought I had a mouse in my van gnawing at something.
It was 100% the skylight pleats, if you hold your finger on the pleats the noise stops.

We had the same on our Pilote Gerry - all to do with the heat and expansion etc.

No it’s definitely the rear wall as it’s obvious where it comes from

We have the same with our conservatory polycarbonate roof. It has never leaked

Dead easy solution, Gerry!
Don't take it away from home and you'll never see the sun!:whistle2:
You could be right there as we noticed it at the New Forest in June and it’s been fine up in Scotland and only happened again here in Cornwall 😂

I posted on the Knaus Facebook page and it seems it’s quite common, here’s the explanation giving.

Heat Expansion of the aluminium panel and the abs plastic surrounds that have different thermal properties

It is the huge crack working its way down the bodywork with all the expansion and contraction, do not worry you will see it soon.

Lots of noise in my van quite often.

I ignore it for as long as I can.

Eventually I get a clout or something thrown at me and have to do something about it quick.🥴

Our new Oven does the same. Switch it off after cooking and it clicks away for ages until cool. Differential expansion of materials.

Expansion & contraction!
Heated up then cooled down, our Hymer does it!

wood/GRP, plastic and aluminium, all expand and contract at different rates.
So much so Hymer (as off July 2019) now fit aluminium sandwich only to there walls, and are different thickness if a colour other than white is ordered.

That is an interesting point. Do the optional darker colours (like grey) use thicker aluminium? That may explain the additional weight Hymer say they add.

Our Hymer does it more of a clicking than a knock, sounds like it's just from one corner at the rear. Never had it on a van before but this one the inner wall is aluminum as well as the outer.

Let the other half out of the garage or in my case a few months let her out of loo as the door had jammed.

Yes , all colours in Hymer range except white use a thicker alloy sheet, and no wood in the walls.

Thank you for that info. Does that only apply to the newer Hymers with both skins aluminium? Mine is 2015, so ply internal skin, but the brochure stated that the grey paint option added 30kg to the MIRO.

I’d agree it’s more of a clicking noise.

I was at the Hymer factory last Sept.19 and the introduction of Alloy/foam/alloy walls was from production July 19 onwards.they paid credit to this to there big brother N&B, having used this Tech. for well over 20years.Along with other high end RV,s
he did,nt say but I guesss its to do with cost of scale these days, or there new American influence,
Hymer make the panels in-house.
