So, our recent week round the uk included some time in North Berwick (which is gorgeous) but my first parking spot near the beach (due to wifes mobility) had a sign same as below beside it. Now, is it legal to say no parking based on height, I've googled but seem to be at a loss?

Perhaps it is a mistake, should be width?

If they have passed a local by law it will be perfectly legal,I would think it is so that the view isn't obstructed from the windows of the building.

I wouldn't want to chance a fine in my van.
Same, to be fair we did find a free space in the lodge grounds car park but its a car park and had to be inventive with parking. Not ideal.

That will mean that some disability adapted vehicles wont be able to park, although wonder if they can with a blue badge.

Glad you found a space, sometimes the signs seem to be obscure ,but it's not really worth the arguments if you end up with the dreaded yellow windscreen sticker, disabled badge or not ,most T Wardens don't discriminate. :(

I've already emailed them :-) Waiting for a reply and thought Id post here, we only went on a day trip and spent about £150 in the town and have it earmarked to go back again but the parking is what puts me off to be honest. I've asked them to clarify the sign and bylaw as well as suggest any other parking for a motorhome in the area.

From memory, a number of years ago, there was a massive harrumph from residents living on the seafront. This had been triggered by the number of motorhomes parking on the front and blocking the residents view. I guess this sign is part of the response. As to its legality, East Lothian Council will be the authority to ask. I think there's other sign saying no parking between X month and Y but can't swear to it. Frankly I can barely bring myself to visit North Berwick, lovely and characterful as it is, due to parking issues (and that's me using the car!).

Most of the ones i saw were on the seafront to be fair, I forgot to get a pic at the time and remembered later when I saw the one at the church.

A question of what is the difference between stopping and parking!

We struggled with parking our 7m Sprinter whilst there in December. Drove round for ages, eventually spotted a traffic warden and asked him where to park.
He directed us to the B&M shop carparks where after going through a short stay part with marked out spaces there was a large, bit muddy at the time, area with no marked bays, ended up at the far end in the muddy bit. It was full then so guessing it’s like that most of the time.
Worth checking it out if you need somewhere to park.

Generally we found it difficult to park in the towns up that area.

That means it's a red route with no stopping (on the marked red lines) however you can use the marked parking areas at any time.

Not the same signs but give you the gist:

PaulC70 Is it at The Baptist Church?
Think the height sign there went up just a year or two back.
Various rumours were going about including higher vehicles blocking out the sun from the church, the tiny wee cottage across the road, etc. Others were the locals were pee'd off about the view being blocked but that wouldn't be the case at the church.
But who knows?

Thanks, I am familiar with the Red route system, my tongue in cheek point was: at what point does stopping become parking. The signs are on marked parking bays so the 'no stopping' part of the sign is completely pointless. It appears symptomatic of the tendency to micro-manage things without thinking them through.

Why not put a smaller sign after Rufus Stone?

So what is the point of this one? Firstly the wording: the term 'only' implies exclusivity yet lists alternatives. The sign provides for anyone parking at any time either as a resident or meter parking so where is the Red Route functionality?

I laughed at the sign, not your comment. To me it's totally contradictorywhich actually applies, as its a red rout I would say the no stopping which you would have to do to park

What I remember ? Even thou the red route is marked , double red lines there are parking bays along the route where you can park even thou it’s a red route ?

What vehicle weighs that ?
If you look at the small print on the signs in a lot of town car parks the limit is 1.5t.
Park you Motorhome and they will give you a ticket so why don't they ticket all the larger cars/suv's/people carriers that are over 1.5t, probably over ½ the vehicles in the car park.
