Is Gibraltar worth a trip...

Buttons,,,
If you park on the aire at the stadium you can walk towards the border at gib, but don't cross the road,, look right and there's a big estate on the right,,, if you go and walk round the estate that will open your eyes!!! La lines I think it's called!! Ask one of the border guards to lend you a gun, you'll be fine with that!! Lololol.

And shout......"

Tá mé Buama LARGE i mo fobhrístí." (y)(y)

A sure way to get a warm and lasting welcome. :)

Sounds welcoming Ian, was this the home of the young lady and her family who befriended you during your trip last year...;):)

Whilst we were waiting to cross into Gib a chap was going to every car demanding 20 euros to cross the border. This was our first (and very last!!) time in Gib and we almost paid him as he looked quite official. Terrible job finding somewhere to park and if you do then make sure you have some sterling as even the parking meters don't take euros.

No mate,, she didn't come from such salubrious surroundings!! If she had I would be living there now!! Lol

If you're a blue badge holder they will let you take a car up

Best part of Gib is inside it. Make sure you see the caves and fortifications.

The rest is sort of English coastal resort.

Can be absolute hell to get in or out if the Guardia ( Spanish border police) decide to be awkward and check every vehicle. Far better to park in secure parking area ( near entrance) and walk in.

Must be just me then. Been twice when on cruises, in no rush to go back again. The view from the top is good as are the caves but as for everything else it's on a par with that other so called duty free dump, Andorra.
Couldn't agree more - both very disappointing.

don't get left with any Gibraltar notes as they cannot be changed in U.K.

A great place with lots of history we went over but left van on Spanish side took taxi to crossing point no problems, just walk as roads are tight, but great people and bars,If you walk over you just get on a bus and drive across the main Gib Airport Runway with traffic lights cost a couple of euros but worth getting a tourist map.

Regards John.

View attachment 150979 View attachment 150980 Well worth a visit , been a couple of times. Last time we paid to have an individual guided tour in a taxi which was readily available.
The Rock is very steep and using this method got us to all parts were our oldish legs couldn't reach. It was a thorough and un rushed trip with lots of information from the driver. Can't remember how much but as a poor old pensioner we managed ;)

Also interesting shops to browse.

That first picture has a very familiar face on it, I think it is a GPMG firing wildcamper. from another forum???? those that know will know what I am on about.

Oh, I forgot about that! Yes we had the same ... hubby just played dumb ... :D

Be very wary of the apes - they are vicious little buggers. Don't take food anywhere near them or hoards of them will come and mug you.

A girl near us had her camera in a plastic bag tucked in her backpack. To an ape 'rustle rustle' = 'food'. They trashed her day sack and broke her camera. Very scary!

I would say no apart from filling up on cheap fuel, if you go in for fuel avoid rush hours at all costs gets a bit busy with 10,000 people crossing the border for work. You are not allowed to overnight in a Motorhome so straight in fill up and out. Very English with English prices a shock to the wallet after Spain. Although duty free most things are cheaper in the UK especially electrial/electrionic goods as the small shops don't have the buying power. If you do go it is worth a walk to the top of the rock.
The Mariner Aire is very posh and pleasant we spent one night and one night of the cheaper Aire only €3.

Note: when driving along the water front be very careful to get in the right lane we ended up driving into Gib by accident.

I'm in agreement with the above. :)In fact even if you were paying me I wouldn't be tempted.

Thanks gus I think that sort of makes my mind up, Gibraltar for the time being is off the to do list..(y)

We didn't know what to expect but enjoyed a day there. We parked at the Marina and walked over. Our initial impressions were not very positive but we took an organised tour around to see the caves, Point Europa, apes, tunnels etc and found that really enjoyable. The town part was boring but It certainly worth a trip in our opinion although we wouldn't rush back.

The apes, are vicious, even if you have a zipped bag with you they will try and open it. If you try to stop them, be prepared to get bitten. They have been known to be crafty with one vying for your attention, and another couple going for your bags. They are fun to watch, but are only interested in food. Gib is interesting, and definitely worth a visit.

How many times in your life are you likely to be in that area again? Will you be fitter, healthier, wealthier? What effect will Brexit have had? IMO: go!

Parking a car is bad enough, the roads are narrow in places, the multi-storey carpark doesn't give change, you will not get your van through the tunnels which provide the easiest route to the lighthouse at the southernmost tip. But GO!

We took our car there (cheap fuel!!!) and had a good time on more than one occasion. We also paid €80 for a minibus-taxi for 4 adults to see the sights, including entry tickets, and were interested to experience the "shunting" of cars which were not parked to the cabby's expectations, the scraping of paintwork in order to get round bends and the ignoring of the "don't feed the apes" instructions.

"Regret what you do, not what you don't" - Gordon

And, as Nigel said, don't get stuck with Gib notes!

If you've got time to spare I think you'd be better off using it visiting either Granada and the Alhambra Palace or a bit nearer, Ronda.

I agree. You can't just "be" in Marbella: travel is involved! If driving from the NE, visit Seville, Jerez, Cadiz (plus Donana, Barbate, Trafalgar, Arcos de la Frontera?): from NW Granada, Nerja, Malaga (plus Frigiliana, El Torcal, El Chorro, Fuente de Piedra?). Don't miss Ronda and possibly Mijas (somewhat touristy).

If flying in to Malaga, consider taking the train into the city and "doing" the tourist bus. How about a trip on the cable car from Benalmadena to the top of Mount Calamarro?

Thanks R902M that is useful, we are flying into Malaga and picking a car up there then driving down to Marbella. I've not been to this part of Spain before so it will be interesting..(y)
