Noticed inverter cable getting warmish.

Had a look and + lead is about 2 mtrs long and - lead about 1.5 mtrs

Is this too long ?

and these were dealer fitted

It's a 1000w inverter.
Maximum load 800w

1000w 8mm cableooks like you have 16 mm2 cable
Working on a total 6nm run you just scrape within 25 mm2,for the small additional cost and future proofing I would go 35mm2
Alternatively you need to get the inverter much nearer the battery,or at least the chassis inorder to shorten the neg cable

For an 800w load, at 12v and a 2 mt cable run

Minimum cable cross section:
25 mm²

I used this calculator

if you double the cable run, the cross section doubles to 50mm

What do you mean by "warmish"? If it just feels slightly warm to the touch after a running the load for a while I'm not sure that is anything worry about if the load is working. The cable will be carrying something like 80 amps or perhaps a little less so it will generate a bit of heat.

You could fit a thicker cable or just get one the same size and fit in parallel to the existing one. This might be easier to do.

The inverter is only about 2 feet or less from the batteries so would shortening the cables cut down on heat

If it's only 2 feet then it looks like they are long enough to cut down and add connectors to double up the cables.
2 neg and 2 pos

Shortening the cables won't cut down the heat on that length of cable, but it will reduce the voltage drop and losses over the total length.
