Is it necessary to get an International Driving Permit for France and has anyone had their van checked for carrying meat and dairy products

off the Gov.com site.

International driving permits are not required and the comments on here regarding foodstuff is that vans are not checked for food now but they still could be.its a risk you take.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated

Unless you have a paper license like us oldies. Then you appear to need an IDP. Hope it doesn’t take long as we go in two weeks!

I believe that you get an idp from specific post office branches.

Paper license,? When I last renewed mine it was changed to plastic. You can't be 70 yet then?

We can’t find any definitive info on the IDP for France. The gov site (as in post#2) says you “might” need one. Anyone have anything more definite?

i dont have specific info on France, but an IDP is £10 from a main post office over the counter so if i was unsure i would invest a £10

As I see it. If you don’t have a photo licence you do need an IDP. Why risk it? Just get one.

I understand that the issue is that a paper licence is difficult to link directly to the person presenting it. I.e. there's no photo. Plus the fact that the Police in Europe may not be used to seeing one.
So if you present a paper licence together with your passport there's a good chance it will be accepted. But giving your Mum's Co-oP Divi number would be a clincher. (Mine 97988 -SWAMBO's 107238)
We've made over 20 crossings (all Dover -to Dunkirk/Calais and have been pulled in for a search in Dover 4 times. Why? I can think of many reasons.
It's a quiet night and we're bored
There's a list of criteria and you're on it (purple vans)
The Ancient Mariner system (who stoppeth one in three)
The French Guy didn't like the way you said "Bonjour" and passed it on to his British counterparts
As my Mum used to say "It's the way you hold your mouth"
You've got a Yorkshire sticker on your van
You haven't got a Yorkshire sticker on your van
You waved two fingers at them the last time you went through and they've remembered.
You shouted "Yippee - we're through" last time and a note was made
And so on ....

Perhaps others could add to the list.
