International Data - France to USA (1 Viewer)

We're going to France for a week on Monday. My partner's son is in San Francisco however and we need daily contact.

At home, no probs. All wifi, sorted

Any ideas on options for data whilst we're in France? Preferably that won't eat the data in seconds. It's all WhatsApp contact but we only have our 2 phones, no mifi set-up in the van.

If you’re only away for a week and don’t have data roaming on either phone it’s probably worth one of you getting whichever provider offers the cheapest option for one of the phones.

If the son lives in SF then he’ll have his own data so WhatsApp no prob otherwise WIFI for him will be everywhere. It’s only a week after all.

No idea about cheap data packages in USA .An esim would be his best option if he’s visiting. Airalo is easy and works well.

Thanks Carolyn. He's on a college trip and has an eSIM plus a fair but of data but he was burning through it so now is sticking to wifi.

I'll look at the options for both our contracts

See what your contract allows you to use in EU. Most providers allow around 12GB in EU which is way more than you need for a week of whatsapping. If there is an issue you could buy a data SIM in France or get one temporarily from providers such as smarty or Lebara. No contract so just pay for a month and then cancel. You can get 5gb for £5 with Lebara. Should be enough. No contract.

Stuff like WhatsApp for text communications uses tiny amounts of data. Voice isn't much more. Video uses more, but 1GB of allowance will still get you about 5 hours of video calls.

It's video streaming things like iPlayer and Netflix... and things like TikTok that eat through data surprisingly quickly.

but if its only comms like whatsapp etc you can get away with a gb or 2
