Will vehicles still be insured if the MOT has been extended?

There is no valid MOT certificate for the vehicle 🤔

Comfort sent me a newsletter which stated that if an MOT had been extended then they would accept it as being current provided there was nothing to suggest that the vehicle was not properly maintained. Didn't keep the newsletter as my vehicle does not need an MOT yet

I don't think the MOT status affects insurance so long as the vehicle is road worthy. Otherwise you would be unable to drive your vehicle to the testing station after it had failed an MOT, been repaired and was then going for retest.

The piece of paper for the MOT is really just a back up to the electronic record I think.

If the mot has been extended then the revised certificate is online and is valid until the new due date. (y) your insurance is still valid on the revised mot.

What he said! :giggle:

If you can see confirmation online on the Govt website that your MOT date has been extended, then you HAVE a current certificate... sorted! (y)

It would be advisable to check the policy, I have just checked mine and whilst the legal minimum 3rd party cover is maintained, comprehensive cover is not.

Why not?

If you have a valid MOT?

Has your insurance company written to advise you of the change of cover?

Why would your mot not be excepted by insurance company the goverment issue mot’s and what they say is when your mot expires

I was replying to Puddleduck who thought that the insurance was not affected by the MOT status, my cover would be affected if the MOT runs out.

This does bring up the interesting point of removing a vehicle from a testing station after having failed on a minor defect and returning later, on my policy only 3rd party cover would apply.

Edit: I am not commenting on the extension period but when the MOT actually runs out either extended or not.

Ah, OK - I thought you were responding to the MOT extension.

Well the situation re expired MOTs is no different now to what it was in February 2020 or prior to that. Your MOT has expired , you book it in for the MOT and drive it to the MOT station. It is legal to drive it there but you only have TP cover. It fails. You cannot drive it away, that is illegal, so you have NO insurance.

Government extension means MOT is still valid subject to all reasonable efforts to keep vehicle roadworthy. Insurance in full still valid. In the normal course a vehicle with a failure not deemed to be dangerous can be driven away provided the MOT has not expired.
