Lost track of how many satellite dish sagas I've watched on campsites, the first thing upon arrival is get the satellite dish up, just before the wheels have sopped rotating. Oh no, there are some trees in the way, abandon pitch, abandon pitch ...........

Oh no, he's found friend who's moaning about not being able to find a flat pitch, despite the whole site being............... flat!

I was nicknamed Tolerant Timothy by my friends a few years back!!

I always thought that he point off going away was to have a break and get away from it all not sit in van watchin sateliile tv an that that is not goin away I didnt even bother much with tv in past to be honest your on hols get out off your van try talkibg to each other or god forbid try leaving that tv at home

I watched a couple arrive at a Aire, went for a walk, as I past them made a greeting as they struggled with a dish. Came back two hours later they had moved pitch and still struggling with the dish.
Made my mind up do not bother with a satellite dish or TV. if it rains I get damp on my walks, or ride. But few frustrations and a great deal of enjoyment had, in particular alongside a canal watching day hire boats negotiate a lock or reverse maneuver.
Not TV what a blessing, but I am simple and easy to please

I’m easy to please too, and also like getting wet whilst out walking, reading, cooking, all the usual.

I’m not so keen on watching other people mess things up, or get frustrated - there but for the Grace of Who/Whatever ....

But I wouldn’t have a van without a telly. We thoroughly enjoy getting away from it all, but still enjoy watching the box on an evening, after it’s too cold to sit outside.

Is it me, or do threads like these have a ‘superior’ air about them?

I would never feel the need to start a thread with ‘I can’t believe what pleasure people get from birdwatching/playing scrabble/ knitting/crocheting’ ......

The Germans are masters at it😂😂

Yep, I'm superior because I haven't got a Satellite dish.

Is it me or do you wonder why bother sometimes? If nobody bothered there wouldn't be a forum.

We have one on a tripod so trees are seldom a problem. They can be a faff but we do like the F1 and Six Nations.
Plus, something to watch on a wet night.

TBH though, in good weather it can go up and then come down in a few days without use.

I'm not sure I would shell out for one on the roof though. The tripod one was an experiment.

Don't watch the tv much but I too would not be without a satellite dish as I will watch the Grand Prix this weekend and the some of the golf majors whilst we are away. Have had a try with a 'firestick' via the mobile which worked when it worked but several spots in Shropshire I could not get a strong enough signal. Okay I could have invested in a booster box but didn't bother as I had the dish. Plus I prefer HD and my data package is big but not unlimited so would not last 4 days coverage of the golf. I also do not make judgement on other people as long as they are not being anti social. I use the forum as always keen to learn and pick up some really useful tips - however a bit scary at how different we all are even within a motorhome community.

We have a TV and enjoy watching films in the evening when its too cold outside - I definitely wouldn't go away without one. We also take an Xbox with us which is a great way to spend a relaxing rainy day - some people probably think that's worse than having a satellite dish though ;) We don't watch much live TV so I'd never bother fitting a satellite dish but seeing as our new MH came with one we'll use it - assuming we actually manage to get away to France this year it'll come in useful to watch Le Tour whilst we're away (y)

I must admit though that we watch with a smile when a MH parks up, raises the satellite antenna and then moves pitch a few minutes later. In fact we've been on a few campsites abroad where they ask you if you want a pitch under the trees for the shade or you'd prefer a pitch in the sunshine for TV ::bigsmile: I'm not sure I could ever be that bothered about TV reception, but its what they enjoy then what's the probelm?

Wow, a gas telly and satellite? How do they work then? :giggle:

The satellite dish is outside so not too much of a problem, but we have to take a little more care with the telly being in the van, but the CO monitor gives us a warning when we need to turn it off or turn the flame down a notch or two.

That's why I like the Avtex, you have a multi choice of inputs (we do not have satellite, if we can get a TV signal and if there is something worth watching that's good, then there is MiFi 4G if your lucky 3G is quite the norm (with 5 G needling more transmitters I cant see things drastically improving in more rural spots) USB Dongle with a couple of films on, and take a few DVD's then go analogue with Scrabble, cards etc.

Our moho came with a typical roof-mounted Alden system. In the seven years having the Sat-TV/DVD player has been both a blessing and a curse. Mostly we prefer to be outside enjoying life, but there have been occasions where we have had to remain cooped up for the odd day or two, and the opportunity to put the books down and enjoy a bit of entertainment has broken the monotony. Painful when the damned system won't play ball but I had a five minute rule and if it didn't come good within five minutes then we shut it down and just jogged on.

Yes, we have invested in a replacement controller and TV as we wanted to be able to enjoy it when we did so choose, but it is not the be all and end all of our time away. Each to their own (but I wouldn't specifically buy another one if the next pre-loved unit we acquire didn't have one :-)

I’ve bothered to put quite a lot of stuff on this forum, but probably never about how other people enjoy their Motorhome. :giggle:

Had an Oyster satellite on old van but as nothing much available south of France onwards haven bothered on new van . We take our Humax box with prerecorded stuff in winter and DVD player or nothing in summer

haven't used our 1 year old avtex yet BUT I bough some S/H dvd box sets of eBay For the rainy days 😁
It's a retro experience just do it  for the fun of it::bigsmile:

I even don't watch the telly at home, live that is. We record everything and watch it if can't do anything else. Cooking a great meal, getting pissed, talking bollox together, scrabble, sunset watching, bird watching....thats why I bought a motorhome, for peace and quite which is non existant with a telly full of shite in the background.

My worst nightmare was watching most campers disappear inside their vans on a nice sunny evening, then within minutes hearing the theme tune drums from the start of East Enders. I think it would be even worse if experienced on a continental site.
Does anyone know if The Dutch, French, & Germans have an equivalent to East Enders, that compels them to watch every night wherever they go?
At the end of the good old day, do as you like folks, but please turn the drum intro down a bit, oh! and the endless rows between the cast...I am on holiday too you know, I have enough rows at home!
Also favour from the ladies, can your hubby come out to play, I'm lonely out here, I cant play cricket or boules, or even shove halfpenny on me own.
Thanks.
LES

I find a compass works well before choosing a parking space and putting up the dish. Rarely fails. And I’m not ashamed to admit that we actually watch the telly... real live telly.

If you are a summer only motorhomes, especially if you tour mainland Europe, then there is probably no point in having a TV in your motorhome. Much better to be outside in the fresh air.

If, like us, you travel all year around then the ability to settle down, on a cold evening, with a favourite TV programme or a DVD, is much appreciated.

In summer we never bother with carrying a TV. In winter we always do.

I used to have a portable sat dish, it worked well but we stopped using it, it took up space and could be a faf to set up. We do like to watch a bit of tv, we have freeview and 4g plus I download a lot of stuff from Netflix and Amazon before we go away, and if all that fails we have hundreds of DVD's we have collected over the years. We have watched them all but can find something to watch again if we need to. As a very last resort we may try talking to each other, but last time we tried that it didn't work well. ::bigsmile: ::bigsmile: ::bigsmile: ::bigsmile: ::bigsmile: ::bigsmile: ::bigsmile:

Personally I wouldn’t want satellit, our MH came with some sort of TV aerial but never considered putting a TV in.

Do have a large iPad and 4G but again I’d rather be doing something else, but we are all different.

On a site on Sunday I did sit with a beer watching a guy getting grief from his other half as he couldn’t get the satellite to work, better still another couple took 30 mins or so to position their caravan, I had to go indoors twice to hide my laughter, once they had finally parked it and uncoupled the guy next to us said, “so whose going to tell them they are the wrong side of the peg”

We bought a TV a year after buying the van. That’s five years ago. I tested the TV when I put it in. It’s not been used since. I thought we would use it but as we don’t watch TV at home I should have known better.
