Just wondered what products people use instead of carrying a spare?

Fiats come with a puncture repair kit of squeeze in gunk and a compressor.
If that fails I'll wait for the breakdown service I pay for.

Have you tried it on a puncture?
The reason I say its useless is because in almost every case where a mororhome is moving and has a puncture the trye becomes shredded. Over the years, quite a number of Funsters have posted pictures of their blowouts and the damage to the tyre is always considerable. This stuff might be suitable as an emergency repair when the motorhome is static and a puncture develops and might get you to the nearest tyre fitter or garage. I got this gunk when I purchased my motorhome from new because there was no spare and the space underneath was taken up by my Webesto heater. The first thing I did was dump the gunk and buy a spare. I'm sure if you dig back a ways you will get confirmation this stuff is plain crap with motorhomes.

Hi guys, the reason I asked is that I would like to fit a locker in place of the wheel and tyre, to store levellers hoses etc when travelling. I think I will have to drop that idea and keep my spare.

I'm not sure if it would repair a simple punctures on the move.
I often see a catastrophic failure of the side wall being quoted although that has often been because the tyre's have been used well beyond their life.
I don't see any reason I should carry a spare if I don't think I could change it. Plus it would easily take me over my 3.5 tonnes limit

Nowhere on ours to carry a spare either inside or underneath so it's gunk crossed fingers and breakdown cover. As so many cars these days don't have a spare either they must be used to coping.

Tyre availability becomes an issue.....some areas of Europe would not have your specific tyre type.....ours for example are Michelin Cross Climate.....may not be available without waiting some time to order one in....

Also, I have heard that on the continent, they won't change just one tyre, they change both on one axle.

I carry a spare but previously could not carry a spare so used puncturesafe for many years.
If I had no ability to carry a spare I would trust punctursafe again.

I also carry a small dispensing kit of puncturesafe instead of the fiat goo crap.

Well perhaps in some places that may be the case....however in my experience I have needed to fit the same tyres on the same axle to comply with Spanish law....just replacing one tyre is acceptable...

This is very true in France. I know, I live here :) I needed a new tyre on my car and struggled to find a garage that would replace just the one, even though the other was almost new!! Not only that but we had to wait 4 days for them to get one in stock.....for an Opel Zafira Tourer (not exactly a rare vehicle!).

Yes! I agree the damage is often considerable although not always related to tyre age IMO. Be aware, some insurance and road side repair company's insist you carry a spare. I would imagine the cost of not carrying a spare could be considerable in the event of a blow out when on the move. You just know it will be sods law when all said and done. We have never had a puncture yet carry a spare and yet if we were to leave it at home on one of our adventures you just know what's going to happen. Hopefully, like me you will never experience a blow out.

Yup. I seem to have collected several fairly bulky 'precautionary' items over the years and never needed to use them. I just don't have the courage to leave them at home.

Think I would prefer to keep the spare.worst case you can keep levellers inside your van and put them out when you stop.If your level just put them under your van.
I have never needed to use a spare but always carried one

We carry a full-size alloy and matching rubber ring, complete with a decent telescopic wheel brace to be able to break the air-gunned nuts from the studs should we ever have to change it roadside. The weight penalty is worth it in my view. I once watched a guy attempting to inflate his motorhome tyre using the supplied compressor and can of gunk in a layby at the side of the Millau Bridge. Suffice to say, he wasn't going anywhere in a hurry that day.

I may be wrong (often am ) but if you use the gunk doesn't that mean that you can't then have the tyre repaired it has to be replaced ?
I know that was the case when I used the gunk on a Zafira as they didn't come with spare tyres just a can of gunk.

My understanding is this stuff once used, makes any further repair on the tyre impossible as tyre fitters will refuse outright to work any further on s tyre that has had this stuff pimped into it. Also I do belive the days of tyre repairs are long gone now. Its slways a case of total replacement regardless how small the damage.

Just make sure if your spare is under slung that you check the mechanism is ok regularly.
Yep - mine was well and truly seized when I got the van, needed the “hot spanner” (blowtorch) to persuade it free. Smothered it in lots of copper slip anti-seize compound, even so it needs freeing off with an impact driver and doing again about every 5 years to keep it free

Wheel Nuts/bolts should never, but never be airgunned on.... they must always be torqued to correct setting.... ANY tyre fitting place should know this and if they don't use a torque wrench refuse to move van or pay until they do.!!!

Lots of people bin the spare and swap it for a 55L gas tank purpose designed to occupy that space.

I think Charlie at Autogas 2000 fits them Basildog

It is true that many of the types v5 of goo supplied with vehicles is z problem.
I have used puncturesafe and there is no problem finding any residue out with cold water.
Don’t know what the difference is but I have seen an effective repair done in a tyre tread that had it in with no problem,
