Last night I was watching YouTube vanlife, on there were a very nice young English couple in their thirties who have a property in Spain and spend most of their time wild camping (subject to lockdowns) in Spain and Europe. It doesn’t matter how wild they camp they always find litter, of course not left by other motorhomers!. The very first thing they do is get out their litter picker and pick up all the rubbish around the area bag it and dispose of it when convenient. I was humbled and felt a little ashamed after watching them do what they did. I have just ordered a “litter picker” and will without doubt carry it on EVERY journey. At a cost of around £5 it’s nothing. I feel that all of us should carry one because if we leave it to others to pick up rubbish , we MH’s will get the blame and loose all those lovely parking spaces.
Rant over!

I used to live on a lane which was regularly littered - usually from cars - Mac Donald’s, larger cans, nappy’s etc so on my daily dog walk would carry a picker and plastic bag and usually filled half/a bag

kept the lane lovely and green and tidy

Often wonder if the neighbours now realise what i was doing after they had gone to work now!

I watched them on YouTube last night, I have been following Sarah and Nick for some time and its not the first time they have been picking up litter on video. Good for them, they come over as a charming couple. Find them as 'exPAWers' on YouTube if you are interested.

There the couple and litter picker is ideal

Can you see the link to the litter picker and click on it? It doesn't show up for me. Odd when I am the one who posted it? I just see a big white space where the link should be...

As a dog owner I had a thought that if we all picked up one additional (not our own dogs) pile of mess what difference it would make... but I realise that maybe a step too far for some. I can honestly say that I have picked up "extra" on a Spanish campsite when some inconsiderate owner let their dog drop its load right in front of some friends pitch (non dog owners).

Litter picker is a good idea though....

We got some ages ago. Take them out every week when we go for a walk round the village and manage to fill a bin bag almost every week (neighbours call us the wombles!). We also take them when we go away in the motorhome and try and pick up litter if we wild camp and try and leave area better than we found it. Even ten minutes picking makes a huge difference.

We always have ours with us. My son has found that people always give him money or icecreams when they see him picking up litter, so it is the first thing he gets out of our mobile home🤣🤣 I am hoping he is doing it for all the right reasons 🙄

It’s win win!

Mmmm controversial... littereses I absolutely hate them... would I pick their shit up...big nope... would i pick my shit up.. big yes.
However back to question..what would I not leave home without...well
MRS POPPYCAMPER of coarse.

WE always do litter picking when wilding, especially up in the highlands of Scotland, breaks my heart to see it in the most remote places.
Equally sad was the rest of the message the van lifers were pointing out to us, that if people continue to clutter up beaches, overstaying their welcome, in beach areas all over Europe but especially in Spain, then it wont take long before the local residents get their way, and wild camping is banned completely as it has now been in Portugal.
As they pointed out the Valencia Region could be just the start of things to come in Spain if people abuse car parks by parking across parking bays, crowding out beach car parks, putting out tables, chairs, & washing lines, and worst still leaving any mess, even if its not theirs behind as it spoils it for everyone.
If you are lucky to find a nice parking spot, tidy up on arrival, then tidy again if necessary before you leave, this should, if witnessed by the locals, send out a clear message that we are not all the same.

We always litter pick when we wild. It’s just the right thing to do and helps improve our image.
We were on Bromyard Downs last winter and Archie and I were rooting in the car parks perimeter bushes as soon as we arrived. A few dog walkers looking at us and our van but nothing said. Following morning, a knock on the van door and one of the walkers from previous evening brought us some freshly baked welsh cakes and homemade jam.

Thinking on this a bit more, how about stickers for our vans saying something like:
MH Funsters leave no trace
or
We take our litter home.
Leave no trace.
or
Protect the environment
Leave no trace.

You all get the picture, any other suggestions?
Good idea or not?

Think it would be better if litter was not let in the first place. Some really lazy dirty bastards out there.

We do have a couple of litter pickers, never previously taken them.

I did once many moons ago pick up a fag packet a guy just threw on the floor in front of him. Made sure he saw me as i pick it up and said "I'll put it in the bin for you", he was stunned for words. Twat.

You're talking about this one aren't you?

I have a little picker and use it regularly. 👍

Yes Nice couple, responsible too, I have viewed a few You Tube videos made by them and another young couple, they all come across as being a good bunch....not all of them are, but these are good guys, with a good attitude to being in their van in Europe....video needs to be in other languages too....

Coincidentally I bought a litter picker just this week for using around my home area. We often have problems with rubbish after the bin men have been and collected the re-cycling - not their fault I must say but some morons overfill their recycling boxes and the lids don’t fit. By the time the bin men arrive some of the rubbish is all over the place. Unfortunately when cleaning up this week I noticed an obvious dumping ground for takeaway cartons, beer bottles and cans which I also cleaned up. Saddens me to say there were also a number of little empty drug bags amongst the haul.
I will certainly be taking my picker with me in the van, as I like the occasional wild camp and don’t want to loose the opportunity.

Totally amazed by the length of the queues of cars for Macdonalds and KFC yesterday. Having eaten the »meals » the wrappings are then discarded from the moving cars. To me they are TOTAL DROSS! Can’t even make a sandwich or cook a proper meal !

Theres a girl on the campra group on faceache that makes custom ones for your van she has many different templates for responsible wild parking.

But i doubt it will stop authorities blaming the campers ... they are an easy target and fits the agenda of banning parkups.

Well done for collecting the rubbish. We live in a village about 9 miles from the nearest Junk food out let and the hedgerows are full of the wrappings that go round junk food. Coffee cups, bottles bags and the many wrappers that go round the stuff. These Junk food outlets should pay at least double the business rate of other proper restaurants, because of the amount of rubbish they generate. Rant over.

I regularly pick litter up when walking the dog in Sherwood Forest. It amazes me how people walk in these places, I imagine for their beauty and chuck litter as they go.
Never takes long to fill a large bin bag.
As an RSPB volunteer I have regularly been litter picking on Budby Heath, next to Sherwood Forest. I feel the same as you.

When our kids were young, if they saw someone dropping litter, they would take great delight in picking it up, handing it back, and saying “Excuse me, you seem to have dropped something!” The offender would usually take it back - speechless, and looking sheepish - and then put it in the bin 🙂

Children can get away with doing this; I don’t have the courage to do it now.

I am often coming across fast food rubbish left in car parks and beauty spots.

How easy would it be for the cardboard containers and paper to be printed with the car registration buying these foods at purchase, then the driver vehicle is responsible and can be identified.

Publicise the fact that cartons will have this identifying reg on them, see how they'd like that.!

The fast food vendors are so efficient with taking the order, to delivery hatch, a little auto printer combined with vehicle reg camera could easily print before being bagged, maybe the bag aswell.
