As many will know our motorhome, known as Eclipse, is a self converted 1996 Iveco Turbo Daily, it has always smoked a bit on first startup but soon clears. Over the winter it has gradually got worse when I've had to move it but not just smoking, it had developed a bit of a misfire for a minute or two.

I acquired a spare 2.8 engine from a Renault Master of 1997 vintage (identical engine but with an intercooler) and that hardly smoked at all on startup so last week we swapped the injectors into Eclipse, bit of a chore as the heater assembly is directly above the engine and had to be removed first. Anyway all done and bled and it cracked up first time, ran well but still smoked a bit. While the heater was out I decided to add some sound deadening material to the engine bay as its always been a really noisy van to drive. All went well and after about an hour we had to move the van, no problem it started first time again and ran happily for ten minutes or so.

An hour later it was a different story when we needed to move it to get a customers motorhome out, the bugger would not fire up, cranks over well but not a hope of running so we pushed it out of the way.

When we got back to it we discovered after a lot of head scratching and swearing that the lift pump intake non return valve had broken up. None of the local factors listed this pump but I found one on Ebay which was delivered on Tuesday. Fitted it but it didn't work well and worse the outlet banjo union would not seal, turned out the mating face on the pump was damaged so I had to file it flat, the bugger still will not pump fuel so I've come to the conclusion it is a cheap and nasty copy and the valves are just not sealing.

So I fitted an electric lift pump, now got loads of fuel to the injection pump and cracking the injector pipes reveals good fuel flow to the injectors but it still isn't firing. It will fire on start ya barstard so compression is ok and valve timing hasn't moved, it has to be fuel related. So yesterday we removed the injection pump ( a proper pig of a job but I now employ a mechanic and an apprentice so they get all the joy :) ) which has now been delivered to a diesel specialist along with four injectors for overhaul. We should get them back late next week and hopefully can get them refitted and get the beast running in time to roll for Peterborough the following Wednesday.

We're supposed to be away in it this weekend (our first weekend away this year and our 30th wedding anniversary on Sunday) for our first motorsport weekend, members practice at Loton Park hillclimb but I now have to tow the race car out behind the work Ducato and travel from and to home on Saturday and Sunday. Jackie is not going to be able to come out for more than half a day due to dogs not being permitted at Loton and our new pooch not being used to being left.

Ho hum, at least I haven't had to leave a car in France I suppose.

Happy Easter everyone, D.

And to think... I have a nearly perfect 2.8 turbo diesel engine with intercooler plus g/box with new clutch, plate and release bearing, new pads etc on the Wagon which is about to become a shed on my land.

Shame it is in Portugal!

Masses of work done on the van then a very smooth drive down to Portugal where it has been parked ever since...

Thanks JJ but I have a complete and good spare engine, it may have been easier to swap the complete lump but it was only supposed to be an injector swap.

It just gets better and better! Gone to work today to load the racecar on the trailer, one trailer brake seized on so had to drag it out with the Ducato (glad I put a new clutch in it last month), got that freed off ok but then the winch motor packed up. This was only a problem because I use the same trailer to transport the racecar and then winch the exhibition unit onto it for shows. Trailer has been parked up since September with the exhibition box on it and I would normally use the winch to safely roll the box off. Finally got it off manually so turned attention to the winch, turns out one of the brush springs has rusted away so new brush fitted no problem. Gave the commutator a squirt of contact cleaner, blew it out with the air gun then tried the motor and the bloody thing caught fire! Contact cleaner is flammable apparently and I obviously hadn't cleared it all out. The flames didn't last long though and it now all works, racecar is loaded and ready to rock. Will drag it out to Loton this afternoon.

Happy Easter everyone, D.

Car delivered to Loton Park and I'm now back home in the warm with a couple of bottles of real ale to while away the evening. Looking forward to tomorrow, first time back on track since August last year.

The way things have gone up to now, I'd keep an eye on the walls, they will be jumping into the middle of the track

Thanks for the positive thoughts JandR, we've had a blinding day, absolutely cracking! Had six runs each at the hill. 1st run was damp and scarily slippy, I ran 1st out of us two and was 3rd on the hill overall. It was frightening how little grip there was, the car tried to kill me at every corner. As the number of runners was relatively low we got a fast turnaround and were back on the hill in less than an hour, what a difference that hour made. The track was totally different with much more grip. Our son Phil did really well posting 80.68 seconds 1st run (my 1st run was 76.81) and followed that up with a 73.03, a huge leap forwards. 3rd runs saw me post a 69.35 and Phill ran out of talent at the third corner so no time posted.

run 4 I went slightly worse with a 70.14 and Phil posted a 72.71, run 5 saw me make a big step forwards with a 68.36 and Phil did 72.09. Final run got me a 68.07 and Phil posted 70.27! My best of the day time is just 0.99 seconds away from my personal best of 67.08 set last August on a nice hot dry day which bodes well for this year. Phil did superbly well to go from 80.68 seconds down to 70.27 in just six runs, it took me over a year to get down to 70 second runs.

Its been a long day as the camper is dead we've had to travel there this morning meaning a 05.00 get up for me and the really great news is.........................................................we get to do it all over again tomorrow:D:D.

Whatever you're doing for Easter weekend I hope you enjoy it as much as we're enjoying ours.

We had another cracking day yesterday, I got within 0.4 seconds of my PB and Phil did 69 second runs 3 times which is an excellent performance after such a short time. He did bin it again but this time up near the top of the hill on second to last corner but no damage done. Day off today and back to reality tomorrow.
