Don’t own one yet
I am thinking about buying a small motor home/ camper van. I would like to hire one before making a decision. Any recommendations and advice would be appreciated.

Definitely hire before you buy. You'll then have a better idea of your needs. It's a very expensive purchase if you get it wrong. So much choice but not a lot to buy at the moment. Give it a few months and the market will be swamped.

you will find this very useful it’s by our glorious leader👍but you must be a member to get it free.😊

:pink: To Fun, we hired before we bought, had an idea of the types/layouts we favoured and hired one of each, we did start looking a couple of years before we bought though. It did help.
However set off to buy a used panel van conversion (PVC) we had liked the one we hired, and came back having bought a brand new 6 berth coach built.
Good decision it served us well for about 5 years till we wanted a garage to be able to take our motorbike.
My most useful bit of advice is Seatbelts, how many do you need, don’t even think of anything which has less than you need. Agree though that the buyers guide is worth reading.

And check the payload and your driving license :)

Swift go in Stockport have a large fleet of varying sizes. Not a lot in stock when i drove past yesterday but still holidays around here.

I've always said that hiring before buying is a really good idea. If you are thinking about buying, I personally would have a look and think about what kind of layout you think you are interested in, then look to hire something as close to that layout as you possibly can.
We did this before buying our first van and it really did change our minds in a big way as to what we wanted and what we didn't.

Any recommendations about where to hire?

Hi Silvercamper it would help if you said where in the country you are based, there might be a hire company in your area which would save loads of travelling and hauling kit up and down from one area to another

Hiring is a great idea. Well, it is what we did so must be

Our 1st motorhome was a campervan. We had a lot of fun on the trip. But with the height & curve of the van's bodywork the shower was a sit down thing.
So, our next hire was a small C-class. That meant we could always walk fully upright and standup in the shower.
For a motorhome purchase it is details like that, that hiring will flush out.
And meant our 3rd motorhome could be bought and not hired.
It's great. But in a couple of years we'd get a 4th :(
Ours is improvable - the 4th would be 2nd hand also but only a year or so old so with current styling, have cab aircon and --- some other feature I forgot

I always recommend a trial run. You may not like the lifestyle for a variety of reasons and it will introduce you to layouts, payloads, etc. The other way is buy a cheap classic type that always hold their prices. That’s the way we started.

Thanks everyone. I am in Pershore in Worcs. Initially looking at UK hire for a few days. I did see something online some time ago about people who hireout their own campervans and offer a driving lesson beforehand. Does anyone know anything about this ?

Here’s a thread from a few days ago worth a look.
