I’m a newbie
Hi everyone,

I hate these intros, how to sound friendly & chatty without rambling so here goes. :X3:

Hubby & I are in our mid 50s, never owned a motorhome, hated camping the one time we tried it, I’m an all inclusive girl and hubby has PTSD after spending his whole childhood in a static caravan in torrential rain.

But I woke up one morning and felt like life was passing me by, I love to travel, why do we only do it once a year, so I fell down a YouTube rabbit hole of Roaming Radfords and Extreme Motorhomers & here we are. After a lot of persuasion, hubby is cashing in some of his pension and we’re buying a motorhome. (Yes, I know our experiences won’t be like theirs)

We hired one last year to try it and after many disasters, a steep learning curve, but still laughing together through the whole messy, angst-ridden week, hubby, the dog and I are ready for our adventures. Be gentle with us :giggle:

Not sure I achieved the non-rambling post though :X3::LOL:

Keep laughing.

At this time of year, you will need to keep warm. (laughing helps).

My suggestion for your first extra would be a re-fillable gas bottle - LPG is so, so, much cheaper than Calor.

:welcome4:
Pay your subscription it gives you access to the classified adds there a few vans on there that may take your fancy.
There is also a guidance of dos and don't when buying
And then all the funster advice
What luciences do you have as it may limit you to 3.5ton or sit the C1 test if you don't hold it for a great choice
Have fun

I don’t have the C1, hubby does but I’ll be doing nearly all the driving. I want under 3.5T anyway.

Thank you so much for the advice, I’m now off to spend more money 😂

Hello and another welcome from us w2f

Welcome Alli46 ,
So what are you looking for ? Any idea yet ?

We want under 3.5T with fixed singles and separate shower & toilet. We’ll compromise on single beds for fixed island, but want a decent sized garage. We also want solar, bbq point, awning, preferable gaslow & rearview mirror/camera and sat nav but none are a deal breaker and we need a 3rd seatbelt as we’ll be travelling with dog. Berths 2 to 4 but don’t particularly want a drop down bed at front as often limits storage. We want newer than 2016 and have a budget of around £50,000.

I have a preference for Chausson 727GA or Benimar Tessoro as I like the bright, modern decor (not a fan of brown) but again not a deal breaker. I’ve seen a few on Autotrader, we’re just waiting for money to come through before we travel to see them.

But thanks for the welcome & the help. :giggle:

Give Simon Simon Select a call they may be able to help source your new toy.

Welcome Alli46 -we were on the same journey as you 6 months ago- my main take away is that there is no substitute for going and looking at vans. I started off thinking of twin rear singles and we needed 3 belts minimum as we have a 12yr old too and a pooch. Soon became clear that many so called 4 berth vans only have 2 belts so that was crucial to our choice and we ended up looking at 5-6 berth vans. I was focused on Hymers and Burstners initially but when we went to look at vans we just thought the living space was too cramped with the fixed singles set up esp thinking about 12 year old getting larger the dog and rainy days stuck inside the vehicle. So we then looked for rear lounge long enough to use the sofas as singles if you can't be bothered to make up the double -and an overhead for the child. So we ended up buying a Swift Escape 674 (not the new model) We are still learning how to use it but there are a lot of experts on this forum who can advise you better than me. Good luck with it all and enjoy the adventure.

Thank you so much for your advice & experience. We definitely want proper beds, I’m 5ft 10 & hubby is 6ft 1 and I don’t want to make a bed up every night.

We live in Kent & have spent a lot of time at Choose Leisure imagining ourselves in the motorhome.

We hired a small one last summer & that cemented our need for an actual bedroom.

That’s the main thing that’s giving me nightmares but I am pretty good at being a minimalist. But I do know that it will be a tight fit 🙈

We were in a similar position as you are now back in 2019. Took a bit from the pension to fund the first van and absolutely loved it!! We are now on van number 2 and still enjoying the freedom of being able to get away at the drop of a hat!!
Travelled all over the UK and ventured in to France last year. But the nice thing is you don’t need to travel too far to sit in a field so sometimes the best trips are local.
This is a great forum ask any questions and you’ll get first class advice!
Happy hunting(y)

Welcome to the forum from us two and muttly Paddy. Like you we hired a motorhome before we decided what to buy. It certainly wasn’t going to be an Italian based French bodied coach build but some of that was down to the hirer. Things like having to repair a mirror with gaffer tape so I could see more than my own reflection.

Welcome!

Make sure you read this before you splash the (hubby's) cash....
