Hymer S820

Hi all, I'm thinking of buying a 2004 Hymer S820 from Countrywide Motorhomes in Ringwood, which was taken in part exchange for another Hymer, just wondering if it previously belonged to a member and if so could they pm me with any info that might be useful.

Thanks in advance

ChrisL

We had a 2004 Hymer S820

616 chassis, manual, LHD, underslung Dometic Tec generator, solar, Rolls Surrette 6 volt batteries.

Make sure it is on the 616 and not the 416 chassis.

I have a 2001 S650, very similar van apart from being just 6.5 meters long and on a lighter chassis.
Absolutely the best van I've ever had and would only change it for a slightly newer model, they stopped making them in 2006 as too expensive to produce and make a decent profit.
The S820 would be too long for me as I don't need the fixed rear double bed but I can't recommend the model enough.
I have loads of info if you need it , just pm me.

Thanks guy's I'd be glad to receive any information about these vans, however I was specifically wondering about the one I've been looking at, all I know so far was that the previous owner came from Hampshire and had, had it for 6 years before part ex'ing it for a newer Hymer I was wondering if the previous owner had any issues with it and if I need to address that with the dealers, they did me a video about 16 minutes long which shows it to be in reasonable condition, I guess I'll find out more when I go and see it.

I wouldn’t hang around, 40k for a merc based Hymer, it’s probably already gone!

I think you need to clarify how many miles its done, previous mot's show miles and kilometers ?
Also its had a bit of history with the brakes , would expect they would sort that out.

Yes it's around 92,000 odd kms, I have a kilometre oedometer in my car and the MOT people usually write miles instead of kilometers. I have been promised a new MOT with no advisories, I think it also had an advisory for ball joints but it has new tyres so I expect that was done. I'll make an appointment to see it in the flesh as soon as possible it's actually very close to where I am staying at the moment so shouldn't be too much of an issue hopefully.

They have got the bhp at 121 which is wrong they are 156bhp, you need to have a test drive we found our 616 sluggish on anything but the flat or downhill.
Great build quality though.
Check tyres for age you may need to factor in 6 of them.

Also check thoroughly the double glazed cab side windows as they are glass and mist up.

Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):

  • Air Handbrake chamber gaitors damage

Thanks guy's, i asked about the bhp, it's a mistake, they also made a mistake in the video they sent, describing the gearbox as a sprintshift, I queried that and they came back and confirmed that it was in fact a torque converter gearbox, they also showed the plate in the video which confirms 5.9 tonne so definitely on the 616 chassis. I guess they have a lot of motorhomes passing through so they will make mistakes occasionally, I'll check it out properly when I view it I'll have a look for the handbrake chamber gaiter as well.

Edit: Kuskus, I think you have the wrong vehicle there, the one I'm looking at, the MOT ran out 9th Dec 2020 and didn't have an advisory on the handbrake chamber gaiter. 90132 kms.

CazPaul, did yours have any seat belts or lap restraints for rear passengers?

Yes it had one seat belt on the rear captains chair so 3 could travel safely with belts.
Watch the fridge freezer too, ours was a Thetford and we required a new circuit board which apparently were not made anymore so had to have a new complete new unit

Hi there I have a Niesmann&bischoff Flair 7100i based on Mercedes Sprinter 616cdi Lhd manual 5.9 ton 8Mts long great vehicle and plenty of space. Unfortunately I recently had to replace the ABS pump not cheap. Apparently this is a common fault on the earlier Sprinters so would try and find out if it has been replaced at any time. Good luck and hope it works for you Ray.

Hi there,
I have the 316cdi Sprinter base on my 2005 Hymer 655, and my abs pump failed OUCH! very expensive for what looks like a simply engineered part, hope I never have to have another one replaced.

I had a look at this after you mentioned it, there is a company that will rebuild your old one and give a lifetime warranty. Obviously I haven't used them but if it's of interest to others see below.

I spoke to this company about refurbishing mine but you need to give them a fault code and I couldn't give them a code as nobody's digital scanner would communicate with the ABS. I have kept my old pump and will try and get the module refurbished Ray.

Looks like a nice motorhome.
MOT history looks fair enough did fail once, horn not working 😊

good morning,
is this moffat campsite??
great dog friendly town 🤞
Not Moffat, it was Scotland though, I remember the site but forgot the name.

Looks like Wiches Craig but might by Woods at Alva. Have used both, prefer WC, and hope to be back when lockdown and risk are passed.

We have a 2006 S820 on the 616 chassis. Well made but not quite as good as our previous Dethleffs.

Our one has 3 captains travel seats but is a different layout to the one you are looking at.

You will find it a bit steady up the hills, so build up speed before.

Make sure the fuel filter is changed regularly as these have no in-tank pump, if not you will brakedown, don’t ask how I know.
In common with all 616 Merc based vehicles the wheels have a 161mm centre hole which most tyre fitters can’t balance, I have a set of adaptors if you need.

You might want to consider fitting hydraulic levelling, energetic lateral movement high in the aft area cause considerable.

The aforementioned fridge circuit boards can be repaired, I did mine for pence.

I hope find this information useful.

Many thanks Mark, and welcome.

Hi all, just a quick update on my prospective purchase, the dealer is unable to do face to face viewings and test drives for the time being because of lockdown, but have taken a refundable deposit to give me first refusal as soon as they are able to do normal sales, which I hope wont be too far away. On a slightly different note, can anyone that's got one tell me the size of the garage door opening so I can work out how tall a motorcycle I can get in the back.

Thanks for all your contributions so far they have been most helpful.

Chris

Hi Chris,

I will measure tonight when I get home from work.

I have a used Fiamma Carry-Moto garage carrier which I removed from mine if you are interested at any point.

Mark

Many thanks Mark, I'll have to see what motorcycle I end up with first and then look at securing solutions. I'm considering the KTM 390 adventure at the moment if it will fit in there.
