I need help from anyone who has a fairly up to date hymer. We have a four month old van but the TV aerial doesn’t work. An aerial wire comes in at the side of the TV but it is dead.

In the brochure for the motorhome it states that it is equipped with a “Radio/tv provision on sideboard incl. 12volt socket, surface speakers in rear bedroom, radio and DVB-T antenna”.

To me, this means an aerial which works the radio AND the tv. The dealer wants to stick a status aerial on. Not happening.

So if anyone can help, I would be grateful.

I think new Hymers are supplied from works with the necessary pre-wiring installed for tv but no aerial.

Our 2016 model had no tv aerial so we now have a satellite system.

When I collected our 2016 a class Hymer the dealer fit radio reception was very poor . I took it back to the dealer and the guy that fitted the radio had not connected the aerial amplifier feed behind the radio, soon sorted.
We had a sat dome fitted from new so no issue with tv reception.

If the brochure states it has aerials then it should have them. I wouldn't pay for additional parts to make your TV and radio work.

Sorry guys you have been had. Hymers for many years have had built in aerials, they used to be concealed in the bodywork usually above the cab, lastest Hymers have a small whip aerial on the roof.

I really don't understand why most UK dealers are so dumb, if they can't be bothered to learn about the product they are selling don't buy from them. You don't get these problem with Belgium & German dealers.

You have a single aerial with separate amplifiers, if the appropriate amplifier does not have power you won't get a signal.
For the FM aerial there is a lead (red I think) behind the head unit, normally taped to the aerial lead, this needs to be connected to the antenna power out on the radio.
For DAB the power is fed via the aerial cable no action needed.
For TV you need to turn on 5v Antenna power on the TV.

No, I don't feel I've been had as I wanted satellite anyway, but didn't know the whip aerial would do for terrestial tv as well as the DAB radio that we use it for.

Thanks for that. I have passed this info on t the dealers. As you say, how they can’t know something as basic as this is extremely annoying. I will keep you posted.

My 2015 Hymer tv aerial works fine in most locations but it does need the 5v aerial power. Not all tvs have this feature but fortunately we have an Avtex one that does, had to go into the on screen settings menu to enable it.

This is my set up.

But I don't know what the grey box on outside of van is, as I can't open it. And also the black box inside with the 2 buttons ?

I agree with Lenny HB that is exactly how ours works. Switching on the 5v supply on our Avtex tv, gives us a decent signal. In France, we could get a range of French tv channels, on most we could switch the audio source to get the original soundtrack when it was a dubbed English programme. At Shrewsbury last weekend it was picking up nearly 100 freeview TV channels.

I don't very often use the aerial for TV as I have a sat dish which saves having to retune the TV every time you move. When I have used it I find even HD reception is good.

Yes, our reception is good, too. We haven't had a dish on the current van, or on the last one. The previous van was bought in Germany, and the dealer told us not to bother with a dish, as we don't watch much tv. The advice was good, and we've never wished we'd had one fitted.
