I have successfully setup ( much to my surprise :giggle: ) a Victron Smartsolar and SmartShunt (Battery Monitor) using V.E Direct to a Raspberry Pi running Venus OS v2.66. One of the advanatges for me is that I can monitor the leisure battery state whilst it's miles away in storage ( I can also see it's still there via a USB GPS Receiver as well)

Many thanks to Two on Tour for advice on the DIY -VE Direct cables and the USB GPS receiver

The current internet link from the Rasberry WiFi is provided by a MiFi, a Huaweii E5577C and a MIMO -3 -12 Poynting Antenna

Has anyone managed to run the E5577 without the battery installed? I see there's a possible firmware hack with DC Unlocker , I'm assuming the battery won't last too long if it's permanently powered via a 12v to 5V convertor

What about this to power the mifi, I believe it only charges when needed on the usb.
I used to run my 5577 of it, now powering my Huawei B535 router with it set to 12volts
<Broken link removed>

I've had mine running off a USB charger for over 2 years now without any issue, I've never tried it away from the charger but I have disconnected the USB supply a few time's in the past and it kept working on it's own battery so I really don't see an issue here

Doesn't sound like it's a decision I need to make anytime soon then. I have read that the batteries tend to swell over a period of time. One solution is to buy a new battery if/when this happens.

Does this work differently ? Currently I'm supplying it with a constant 5V usb via a 12v to 5V convertor.

I'll be going to my place where it's in us later, I'll check and take a picture of the battery to see what it's like

Yes, what's the difference to just plugging it into the van permanently via a socket?

Or, but maybe I'm misunderstanding the set-up, just plug it into a USB socket on the Pi as it looks like that powered up permanently?

Distance between the two possibly, but no reason for me not to try that, except it would need a bit of dismantling of the MH to hide the cable run.
The USB output cuts off when it detects the battery is charged.
If the MiFi is always on , the battery is always being drained obviously, so does the step down mentioned above constantly cycle on/off .If so is that better than what I have already?

Once the battery is charged the charging circuit in the MiFi will stop drawing current from the USB supply so the power supply will turn off. Once the battery charge starts to drop it will start charging again.
That's the theory but how well it works you would need to runs some tests to find out.

steveh57 Did you find a solution for this? What was the broken link to that Manic posted?

I couldn't power mine without the battery in and it swelled up.
I changed it for a Netgear nighthawk M1 which works without the battery so problem solved.
