We've used one of these for a few years now with a 3-mobile sim card and it works reasonably well. We also have an external aerial which doesn't seem to make any difference, but I've never known whether the aerial is to improve reception of the signal to the mifi or to make it easier for mobile devices to receive the mobile signal. Does anyone know please?

I thought it was to aid reception signal from the outside world TO the MIFI? But don't know for sure.

It’s to improve the signal as the aerial would be outdoors where the signal is stronger

What type of aerial do you have....roof mounted or the ones you stick on a side window ?

We've just got the portable MIMO type stuck to the side window. It seems to improve reception.

We have started using a Huawei E5577C with a 3 sim for WiFi this year. So far we have only used it in the uk due to travel restrictions.
In our motorhome it has worked well without an antenna propped against one of the rear windows. An odd thing I found last time we were away was a lack of signal with the window blinds down. Moving it to the top of the dash to re charge it brought the signal back.
Maybe we have been lucky but the last thing I wanted to do was fit a roof mounted antenna.

I've used a cheap £5 jobby with a long lead and a more expensive, bigger, stick on the window type and in good reception areas both have made little difference.

However they have both picked up weak signals in areas where there has been no phonecsignal or mifi reception without.

I have a model without an aerial socket and it seems to work fine without one, which is just as well.
I don't use it for streaming, so maybe bandwidth is not so good.

And that sums it up really. A mifi on its own will work in most locations but you may have to move it around the vehicle at times to get the best reception.

You can get things like the Netgear Aircard which work quite well stuck to a window but to get the best possible reception in a given location nothing beats a proper external antenna which is going to cost £100+ just for the hardware. They really do improve the signal in marginal areas but on say Blackpool sea front they aren't needed. It all depends where you go. :)
