Hi, New to forum and this is my first post - Had a caravan for 20 years and my motorhome for 4. I have now retired and my wife retiring in 3 weeks so off to France with van for first time😀 Question is going for 4 weeks will 2 x 6 kg gas bottles do if I plan to stay mostly on ACSI card campsites so will hopefully have hook up but mixed with a few France passion off grid places too. looked at refillable gaslow, gasit etc but would like to wait until after our first trip to see if it will be a regular thing or staying longer.

Thanks and appreciate any advice.

Well - that really depends upon your usage but I suspect you'll cope with that. We're doing two and a half weeks in France at the moment: we started with a full 6kg and one that was well used. We have now finished the latter and moved on to the full one on day 8 of 17. We are only using gas for some cooking and hot water and occasional heating when it's chilly in the mornings. We have an inverter and are using a Ramoska quite a bit and an electric kettle. We've been off grid all the time using a B2B charger with 200ah of lithium.

Wow that was quick! And thanks settles my mind a bit - I thought about taking one and have fittings for French bottles clip on for le cube and butane to propane connector etc but was unsure of cost and how easy it is to buy a French cylinder having to give address etc.
think I will go with the two and suss it out on our first continental adventure but thanks for info folks😀

Are you going to travel to France a lot? I have refillable but my brother got a French pigtail so he has one UK bottle and one French one. In France he uses the French one all the time as getting new ones is easy, just uses the UK one as back up. That way he removes any anxiety over running out.

Thanks Andy - that is exactly the way I was planning but thought for the first visit I would suss it out regardIng availability, how easy, and cost to buy French gas cylinder also LPG refillable etc.

Should be plenty in this weather, but another 6kg strapped in your garage ? upright just for this run

When you state 6kg can your gas locker hold a 13 kg size as I have only seen French bottles of that size. If you plan to do Europe a lot how about one small gas low refillable and the uk 6 kg as a spare.

mmmm sure I read that wasn’t really advisable - will take the fittings and if I used the 2 could strap an empty in garage and try and get a French cyl??? Thanks for advice though. Would really just be fridge and some cooking if off grid for a few nights hopefully won’t need too much heating in June😊

We have 2x6kg calor and have a campingaz 907 as back up cos you can exchange campingaz in Europe
Always ensure the calor bottles are full when starting and have done 6 weeks on a mixture of sites with EHU and aires, only really using gas for cooking, fridge and hot water and never yet had to use the campingaz but it’s there if I need it

2 Full 6kgs will be plenty.

Go and enjoy.

I use French gas. These can be found at most Intermarche and Netto.
They are 10 kg butane and 9kg propane.
Was 1€ deposit and around 23€ to exchange. The pigtail is same as that on a 4.5 kg Calor butane. 21.8 LH thread.

One thing, what sort of fridge do you have? I ask, because the tall fridge/freezers can use an unexpectedly large amount of gas.

With care, 2 x 6kg should last OK if you're going to use mostly ACSI sites and have a hook-up. You could always use 1kw on a fan heater if you needed to take the chill off the air in the van. We also always use a low energy (1kw) kettle when mains electric is available.

Small tip, consider whether worth having a separate portable gas cooker for emergency use, just in case... We always have one in the van, even though we've got a refillable gas set-up. Comes in handy if we want to cook fresh fish outside, which can be a bit smelly in the van. ;) But also useful as emergency backup. :giggle:

They are surprisingly good IMHO @ circa £15 or £16, don't weigh much and fit in a neat plastic carrying case.

Have a great trip! (y)

Our gaslow 2x6kg used to last about 4 weeks in Benidorm with no heating use and some cooking. That's without any hook up 👍

Induction hob are also light weight and versatile, but probably need hook up for most M/H owners.

We used about 15kg/month for cooking and a large fridge/freezer off grid for 5 months in lockdown 1.

donkey I have to disagree with that..
The Dometic RMD8555 large twin door 190ltr fridge freezer uses, as quoted 420g/24hrs.. so therefore a 6kg bottle will run it for 14days..
IMO that is not "an unexpectedly large ammount of gas"

Hi, Sorry just getting back to this, but spent my month in France with my two full bottles no problem, I was Plugged in most of the time as using the Acsi card was cheap during June so all well. Used my other bottle for my Cadac grill a lot but other than that was really just cooking and 2 nights off grid on a French passion site so using fridge. Will leave the refillable for now.
