I don't see the problem with £90 a night charges. It is a free market and they can charge what they want. If they charge too much for what they offer people will stop going.

Depends on location and facilities offered. I can imagine a site where £90 is warranted.

I would never pay that. I much prefer a £10-15 site that gives me water and toilet emptying facilities and nothing else but peace and quiet.

But I would never complain about a site charging that much, I just wouldn't use them.

We're on a site on Spain, €16.5 a night, including EHU 10 amps and WiFi that's good enough to stream TV, water and drain on pitch, swimming pool, restaurant and shower blocks. It's next to the beach too.

I gave up worrying about extra charges, now I get a price for what I need and don't worry about how they got to it. If the price is ok I'll stay, of not I'll go elsewhere.
Some have a flat rate, some charge for dogs, people, awning, etc. I only look at the total.

The nuts thing is you can be camping at a music festival some of those weekends with 4 days/3 nights camping Fri-Mon and live music for £60 per unit night (£180 total) (including entertainments for 2 adults, 2 kids + dogs).

Are people just not aware of the motorhome events those weekends?

My point being, why pay £60 a night for just a campsite, when you can have that, entrainment, and events for the family for similar money along with reasonable music every night for same money...

I agree on that, but there are some greedy private sites (as well as the clubs) out there on bank holidays in particular. We've had to stay at one due to location last year and wanting to meet some family in a particular area, and as we were on tour in the motorhome at the time, we had no choice but to use a relatively expensive £40/ni private site, but as diesel to drive the van home was more expensive than paying the price, we paid it.

One of the "clubs" last year wanted £300 from us for a site over the bank holiday up in Cromer our first year out in the van. We funnily enough didn't book that, given the other club had a site literally next door wanting £70 for same weekend total, for 3 nights. We didn't see that £23 quid a night for a bank holiday was bad for a club site, so we booked with other club.

This "demand" pricing one of the clubs in partciular is famous for is just driving us away from their sites on bank holidays and into their competitors hands. I have a sense given all the free night offers kicking around last year, the club in question is struggling with bookings at moment.

Can you tell me where i can get accommodation with facilities for less than £15 per person (adult) per night. yes some seem pricey and we only use those twice a year.

They are not being greedy, they are pricing to the market. It is not their fault you felt you had no choice. They perhaps cater to a different market than to what you are used to.

We are currently on a site costing a bit more than we would normally pay at this time of year but it is exactly where we need to be right now for family reasons. For £40 we have a fully serviced pitch, the use of a heated lounge with complimentary tea and coffee, the individual full facility shower rooms are properly heated with heated towel rails and no children. Perhaps not a site we would normally use other than out of necessity but they are providing excellent facilities and clearly some people are happy to pay for this type of site. It is an easy choice, if you don’t want to pay the price of a particular site then don’t book it.

No, I'm not. The prices quoted were standard rates for the types of campsites we stayed on, the lower rates of $18 being after a disabled or senior discount; almost all of the sites we stayed on had disabled accessible pitches and disabled shower/toilet facilities. What I was trying to get across was that $33 was the upper threshold of what we would be happy to pay, but here in the UK prices for similar sites are much more expensive.

We were in the company of a couple who said they were from Sheffield. (I've applied to have their Tyke status removed) who said, with a straight face, that they happily pay £70 a night to stay in St. Ives.
They compounded the felony by adding that one year, they stayed 'up the hill' on a site @£35 a night but the walk back at the end of the day was too much.
Other than the fact that I wouldn't pay £35, hell, they could have caught a taxi for a fiver.

I hope they have their sheffield status removed and are publicly humiliated for paying that much

If these campsites are filling their plots at those prices during peak periods then fair play to them. The optimist in me hopes that means there would be funds to invest in the facilities on site which would benefit those of us able to travel outside of school holidays.

(But as said, it sucks if you're a family or teachers and can only take time off during peak periods.)

Bah, it's not all as bad. Most of us won't pay the stupid pricing.

Locally near my house in suffolk (so useless to us) there is a aire for £5 a ni, a campsite with no shower block for £10 in a small village with many pubs, and an onsite coffee/breakfast place. No electricity offerred at either but who needs that?

I suspect a lot of this is becuase a lot of people not on this forum want EHU and totally take piss this time of year.

I can sympathise with that view. The strange thing is that the same people who say you are a ripp off wouldn't put the work in to be able to do the same job and never suggest to their kids that they do your job either. If it's such an easy way to make money why not.

Where are those sites please

Middle of Bury ST Edmonds, Aire, in the Ram Meadow carpark, £5 a night overnight ish, prob less in fact, £7 for 24 hours last time we stayed. 2 day max stay I think it is. Only downside is the limited (5) bays. Nice town, many pub/resturaurant in walking distance as well as historical ruins and walks. It's a popular aire, been full every night we've got in, showing the demand for this. (Don't worry if full as later in evening a lot of the other long stay spaces free around 5pm and people tend to park ovenright over 2 normal spaces then move in morning before the wardens arrive). Can't guarantee you won't get a ticket, but we never have, and we have left at 9 from 2 spaces.

Garnhams Field in Needham Market is a flat £10 a night, it's grass not hardstanding, large campsite, but they have vans on even this time of year (we drive past reguarly), another small town with many many walks on fields (check public footpaths to see what I mean) nearby, and at least 6 pubs walkable, and 4 of them do pub food ( I would reccomend a loop walk to the Barking church from the campsite, and stop at pubs on way back). One Indian Resturant walkable alongside a country park which is popular for dog walkers (about 10-15 min walk from site, mostly on back roads). No EHU available, just elsan + water + grey, but does have onsite cafe with breakfast and coffee. Theres antoher nice (hardstanding) field up near Framilingham on the CL system (£20 a night) but that does have EHU, but again no shower/toilet, just elsan, water and grey.. amazingly rural (no light pollution at all). Great on a clear night. (Offifically it's a CAMC CL, so they may check membership on both)

Thats before you get into the free options avialable if you know where to park (Search for Sites). Honestly it's mad people paying for stuff when you can park on the seafront legally around here, although the locals have been trying to get motorhomes banned due to people in summer there (it's a motorhome village in summer on a road in felixstowe).

We use the above Aire ourselves as it's better than us both having to drive back from Bury and allows us to take the dog out for a meal (many places dog friendly). We don't use the Needham Market one personally as we have family and a driveway in the town we can use, but do drive the van to the coast at weekends a fair amount.

Should say you do need to prebook on both the field and the CL mentioned, but both are open all year (as is the aire). I would reccomend the field above in particular in summer, as it's a beautiful area, and for £10 per unit per night, it's a bargain (assuming you have solar enough to stay off grid for a week).

Since when did a pitch with electric cost £90 a night. Granted it’s over the start of the late May bank holiday and I get the rule of supply and demand but I could have rented a six birth static on the same site for £120. Is this now the norm?

Both the main clubs are taking the P. My main gripe is the site's promotion is based on "from £8 for members". then when you try and book even the cheapest pitch comes up at £25 . do they really think we are all that gullible ?.

The back end of the last two UK summer tours we stayed at Twitchen House and their sister site Easewold farm above Woolacombe for about six weeks each time. Normally my idea of hell but end of the summer / autumn they are not so bad and if you want to be in that area probably the best (and cheapest) option. An absolute bargain for a fully serviced electric pitch which some weeks we got as low as £11 a night. I priced up their premier pitches though for August and on certain dates they were an eye watering £99 a night.

Its supply and demand I guess. A lot of post pandemic newbies were probably used to paying £200+ for a night in a shed (Sorry Glamping pod) or a B&B so £50-£90 for a pitch in their new pride and joy probably seems a bargain!

At the other end of the scale some of our favourite CL's for summer at least are still as low as £7. I have a mental ceiling of not being comfortable paying more than £20 and I expect hookup for that.

I don't think they will in terms of parking restrictions. We live in Scarborough borough council area I don't think it's likely that anyone is going to miss so many motorhomes being parked in sandsend in the peak season. I have responded to the consultation saying they ought to restrict motorhome parking in the daytime when spaces are in demand and allow overnight parking but have little hope of any effect.
In site fees if nobody booked at peak times the prices probably would drop but what's the odds of that happening
