Driven a van there very cheap living costs poor wages and a lot of gypsies - you cant just open a gate and walk on property there it is not acceptable - probably down to low wages and everyone trying to make a few lev - certainly worth going if you keep your wits about you

SOLD it
We went 2yrs ago and will be there again in July with our 2 poodles. Not over run with campsites and most seem to be of a poor standard and quite expensive. There are of course exceptions, we found 2 nice sites owned and run by ex pats.
Sakar-hills campsite is close to the Turkish border and not too far away from the Greek border

Then there's camping velikotarnovo located 15 minutes drive from the old capital of Veliko Tarnovo.

Both of which were nice sites, well maintained and extremely clean.

Camping Zora is a lovely clean site on the Bulgarian seaside resort of Obzor

We also wild camped in several places including a lovely beach just south of Varna with no hassle.
Eating out is very cheap as is beer and alcohol. The locals we came across were friendly and helpful.
