Hi all.

We are back from our maiden trip which went pretty well and without any major problems.

We ended up having to scale back the distances travelled because I wasn’t feeling great after my accident but, even allowing for that, I was surprised at how tiring the driving part was. We did something over 1100 miles in 13 days with the longest being about 250 miles in the day – which pretty much wiped me out (I am doing all the driving at the moment as my wife hasn’t yet passed her C1 test – obviously once we can share the driving things will become a little easier).

I’m interested to know how far others travel in a day before you start to feel like it’s too much. Obviously there are some days where you just want to do short trips to see one thing or another but, when you’re trying to cover distance to get to a destination, how much do you aim to bite off each day?

Thanks

Chris

Heading to Spain we usually do 300 miles the first day, off tolls that is quite a hard day but it gets us to where we want to be although in the future we might "want to be" somewhere closer, a lot of it does depend on the roads though, just recently we did just over 100 miles Northern France towards Belgium and it took hours and hours and was very tiring.

I don't 'tour' in U.K. and I never use motorways 'over there' so 200 to 250 (about 7 to 8 hours with a couple of stops) is about enough although I rarely drive that far as being retired I'm never in a hurry and stop overnight whenever/wherever I fancy.
I occasionally used to visit my sister in Penzance (about 280 miles) in summer but always drove overnight on 'A' roads which I found avoided (most of) the holiday traffic hold-ups. The bonus with a m/h is that one can stop for 40 winks, a bite or a brew at any time.

I think it is a very individual thing. Some drive all day and we've done a few long hauls but only rarely, for example in Italy when it was so hot it was better sitting in the van driving with the A/C on than stopping for the day at lunchtime. The latter is our preferred strategy, stop for lunch then explore our surroundings on foot in the afternoon.

It also depends where you are. If you want to explore the Mosel than 30 minutes driving each day might be too much because you will drive past good places to stop if you do more.

We've tried pottering on our current trip but we were caught out by the weather so we shot south.

But for us a maximum of two hours a day is ideal but less than that is better. We've done several hops under a hour in the last few weeks and these were bliss. :)

About three hours is maximum for me, done more, but not often.

Sometimes only an hour if we pass through a nice town/village, and there is a nice aire.

We don't 'tour' much in the UK and never use toll roads.

After brunch I drive for 4 hours, take a food break then drive for another 4 hours.

These are maximums, quite often we arrive at the intended aire and the 2nd drive is shorter.

Best way to see France. We can't afford to do much in the UK.

I suppose we average 50-100km per day when touring.

I have done the 1,000 miles from Canterbury to S. Poland, incl. the ferry in 2 days solo, but that was to get to Basia's Mother's 90th.

This week we will be doing 3 days of 300km, again to meet a deadline but nearly all M/way, which is very different from 50-100km in the Alps or Pyrenees on twisty roads up and down the gears. Although today 100km on the Autobahn was enough because it was in heavy rain and spray where seeing cars in front and behind was a strain, but fortunately being Sunday the majority of trucks were parked-up; just one fuel tanker to overtake.

As I'm short on time available to me. I'm happy to sit at the wheel all day to get to the sun. Last year coming over the mountains returning home was a bit too much totally underestimated the time it would take.
I've done lake Bodensee to home near Worthing in one hit only stopping for fuel toilet and tunnel. It was an emergency though.

Having done years of 9/11 hours driving a day, flat out and mostly on motorways, I'm now more than happy to just pootle along. Of course if we're going somewhere planned, we tend to do a lot more per day but even then 4 hours is enough for me. But if we spot something nice we're happy to just stop.

Unless we want to be somewhere in particular at a certain time, we never book, just find somewhere when we're ready. In over 10 years of motorhoming have never yet found somewhere to stop that we're comfortable with, although we have moved on from a few "first choices".

Same here. No more than three hours, prefer two.. ?

Usually only about an hour and sometimes less. About the longest we ever do is 2-3 hours but that's only rarely and usually to get away from bad weather.

Two hours then a break then maybe another two hours but depends where I’m going, no rush these days.

We normally do 2hrs or so, stop for lunch etc. then another 2 hrs.
So in a motorhome that's about 160m.

I love driving the motorhome but it is more stressful in someways than a car due mainly to being careful where your size is an issue.

On the motorway I travel at between 60 and 65mph taking things easy and driving defensively.

The only thing that really gets to me is vehicles merging on to the carriageway when I have right of way on the main road. Anybody might think they have jobs to go to.:devil:

Have done some long drives. The longest i reckon was from St Paul le Dax in France via st- Jean- pied de-port, Pamplona, then on to Valadolid, then on to Malcata in Portugal in a day. Had a few breaks along the way but took from 9am in France till 11pm in Portugal (still on French time).
It was good to get there but a bit knackering so had a few nice relaxing days in the sun and quite a few cold beers.
I haven't done it since and usually stick to a maximum of about 450km a day.

2-3 hours is our preferred travelling per day, but happy to do more heading south for the sun. Having two drivers makes a huge difference.

Still only want to do a maximum of about 200 miles in a day, if possible.

If on the motorway - traffic and weather permitting - we normally pootle along at around 70mph in the pvc. A good 10 mph quicker than in previous coachbuilts.

In Spain at the moment and plan to drive just 45 miles to our next stop tomorrow - circa 1 hour - lovely! :)

Ours is very up and down anything from 5 miles to 250 sometimes over 300. If traveling to get somewhere 100 to 150 makes life easy.
On current trip the 600 miles across France took us 7 days kept finding interesting places.

I guess it depends on whether you’re able to travel for more than 2 weeks at a time. We can’t as we’re both still working but if we weren’t we’d drive for 1-2 hours max a day ?

These days if I’ve got a destination that I need to get at a certain day I would do 300/350 miles but this is not often now,I just love meandering and can often stay do 5 stops in 7 days and only cover 100-150 miles.
When I had to squeeze into a time frame in days gone by we had a PVC on a Sprinter and I’ve done 1000 miles a day , Gibraltar to Sainte's 12hour drive, early start say 6.30am the following day and been back in Yorkshire by 4.00pm that’s serious shifting. Much prefer the meandering in my dotage:wondering::frowny:

Hi. We go off up to the Highlands once a year from Essex ,and we often do more than 500 (this past May - 560) miles on the first day. We do this to maximise our stay, as we only get to do two weeks up there at a time. For my job, The most i have done is 900 miles in a day. Now that was a real killer.

When my other half Mrsambulancekidd lived in Carmarthenshire I happily drove 440miles from Scotland with a short stop at Keele services for some food & the loo.
Hazel did exactly the same thing when travelling up here, no problem at all.
I do notice though that the older I get, the less I'm inclined to do long journeys in one hit.

I will do Surrey to Ayrshire in one go thats 440 miles,at 60/65MPH BUT will only do it overnight, leaving home at 8PM as the motorways are quieter, less stressful, so you can cover many more miles much quicker than trying to do it through morning or evening rush hours.
However in the van my bum normally dictates our average run time/distance as it starts to get sore & numb after on average 180 miles or 4 hours.
Need more padding I think.
