Itching to get away, I'm looking at all sorts of options, but realistically have narrowed it down to a 90 mile radius of Cambridge. This will let us explore almost up to York, the Black Country (lived in Worcester for a few years), the Cotswolds, Home Counties, most of Kent and of course Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Suffolk.
Doesn't sound too bad does it?
Having our 4 girls, we're limited to weekends only out of term time. Oh yes, husband has to pop to the office occasionally to pay for our FUN. :)
Exotic locations will have to wait for a while, sigh.

I would think about two hours travelling would be enough but it really depends when you leave. If you have to wait until after work/school on Friday then you are likely to hit traffic and it could be late when you stop.

We are lucky living where we do as there are some great bits of Devon and Cornwall within easy reach but in winter I would always want to stop before it gets dark which would mean getting away shortly after lunch on Friday where possible.

Of course if you are travelling to a specific event then the distance could be very great if you were keen enough to get there.

Living the dream.
Living in notloB we have to contend with the M6/M60/M62 to go south east or west around Manchester but luckily we have the North York Moors and The Lake District so as has been said we can be in a fantastic part of the country in a couple of hours hopefully on Friday afternoon/evening.

As Devon says about 2 hours unless we really want to go to an event, sometime we just go 15 miles from home and feels like the other side of the world.
2 hours for me covers a lot of options living in the South West of Scotland.

If we are going away just for a weekend, Friday & Saturday night home Sunday we go up to 100 miles or a couple of hours driving and hope to leave by mid morning on the Friday. We normally do this once a month to keep the wheels turning. Sometimes we only go an hour away just for a change of scenery. (y)

We are planning 2 hours max leaving around 4pm on a Friday during the light nights. We have many great places to go to that can be reached easily from 1 - 2 hours and as Lorger says, even 15 miles is sometimes enough if the place is right.

I believe that you only have to be up the road as long as you are away from home. I live only 30 mins from Windermere but we often pop up there for a couple of nights. There is always something new to see.

When my boys were young we tended to stick to our local C&CC DA. There were lots of children which meant they played all day and were happy, we could sit around and chat and drink, so we to could chill and relax. Most meets were never more than an hour away. Was quite surprised the other week to see my two university based boys at a C&CC youth meet at Alton Towers with a load of the others they grew up with. They seem to have all become friends for life. If it's just for a weekend trip 2 hours max. You need to make sure that you don't spend more time driving than having fun.

Hoping to get away twice a month - at least in better weather. Near or far, I think the biggest turnoff is the traffic. So I think the best plan is to work from home on Friday and bundle the kids in the MH, as close to 3:30 as possible.
Returning early on a Monday sounds naughty - bit like playing truant - but I like the sound of it!

Put a pin in the map where you live do a fifty mile radius from it, I would image it would take a long time to exhaust the possibilitys.

We tend to do 50/60 mile for a short weekend.

Probably 3 hrs at most it's what we're used to as that the time it takes to get to our holiday cabin, feeling sometimes that it's getting a bit of a drag to do more than once a month. A holiday park owner once told my sister that an ideal weekend retreat should be no more than 90 minutes away.:)

Since 2009 with motorhomes several caravans then tents before that.
We used to pick the kids up from school , in it on a Friday, most weekends when they were younger. At least every other.
Ralphs party trick was shouting out of the window in his best gypsy accent.
"Will you get in the van, will ya!"
We did the same thing when we had the caravans Too.
Then go on to a rally with the CCC club, or somewhere with just us 5 . Making sure we were back home by no later than 4 ish on a Sunday afternoon.
Now the twins are 18 and the eldest 20, they rarely come , as they are either working or have other things on.
So for eg this weekend Ralph will work the Thursday morning , then were away , without the kids till Sunday . Were going to Whitby Goth weekend.
There's always somewhere lovely to go , living in Yorkshire. Within an hour or the most 2, for a weekend.
We've yet to go abroad it it ! Believe it or not.
Were still flying off for our main holidays.
Just try and get out as much as you can , whatever the weather. Is our moto.

Just for the weekend, sometimes less than 10 miles, but never more than 100. We do travel further for longer breaks but one of my biggest discoveries and mindset changes having bought a motorhome was that you do not need to travel many miles to have a good holiday and gives you the excuse to visit local places that are too close to day visit in the car. In fact since we now do not travel so far, getting out is far easier and takes less planning so we manage to get out most weekends

We are off to Hawick next weekend

That's why I posted we are going to Hawick next weekend :)
Yes it is a start Irnbru, unfortunately we've booked Balgair Castle for the W/E to take the grandkids.

I'm sure us Scots can arrange something for all in the future.

Well last time in used van we drove to Lincoln about 5 hours it took. Arrived about 11.30 pm Friday got home about 10.30pm Sunday. so for something I need to do or see that be my limit really for weekend. I usually like about a 90 min journey but don't mind a bit more. Luckily that gets me to new forest easy lots to the new forest we love it. Unfortunatly we can't go south or we would be in the sea so its north east or west for us
