I'm trying to sort out insurance for our new Carthago but as it's over £75,000 value our current insurer, Comfort, are insisting on a tracker (cat 5 or 6), however they don't require an alarm, I'm therefore looking for advice/info on the following please:
  • How much a tracker is likely to cost (install and yearly fee)
  • Are there any insurers that DO NOT require a tracker for a high value MH (£85,000)
Many thanks as always.

I’d be giving it the full Vanbitz Growler treatment regardless of insurer requirements, I think a tracker is then circa £199 if added to the install.

In fact we just did, but ended up being up sold from regular tracker to the non-starter system.

Easily led by tech toys, me! ?

We had the same requirement on our Carthago. Bought the thing from Globel Telemetrics. Once fitted you can download their app and see where your van is. It’s worked ok so far except when it didn’t detect movement when we were on the ferry from Norway to Denmark. I contacted Globel and a replacement module was fitted without delay.

Also ensure you have windscreen cover sufficient as some aren’t and only give a couple of grand ?

My van has 2 trackers, the meta track I think is the better the app on the phone is very good. The other is global telematics

I insured our new RV over a £100k a few years back and now our Hymer close on £80k with Safeguard who did not request a tracker be fitted. A complete package of rescue and Europe travel etc and no limit on large screen.

NFU at Louth, no tracker needed on a high value vehicle. However they are unpredictable about who they insure for reasons unknown. Best to try and give them more than one vehicle may be good bait?

We have been with Safeguard since buying the Carthago.
They wanted either an alarm or a tracker but not both.
Their policies also include breakdown cover as standard.

Richard

Just to add..........
As stated above, watch the windscreen cover.
For some reason Carthago’s seem to have a magnetic attraction to stones.
We’ve had three new screens in just over four years. I know of other owners who have also found that their Carthago’s seemed to have more that their fair share of windscreen chips.
A genuine Bertone screen can cost up to £3k, more if the fitters damage the side trims.

Richard

The Chichester branch of NFU is good with Motorhomes my mate recently insured his Carthago E- Line with them . What may effect your decision is NFU will only cover Croatia 3rd party.
For us NFU were a few hundred quid more than Comfort so may work out cheaper to fit a tracker.

Thanks for the replies so far, Safeguard won't do a policy without recovery which we don't need as the new MH comes with Fiat's own for the first 2 years (more if we take out their extended warranty), that's why we changed to Comfort last year when we bought the new Globecar.

Regarding the windscreen cover, Comforts is unlimited so long as we use Autoglass if needs be, otherwise it's a max of £2,500.

Watching this with interest, having the same issue. If I feel the need for a tracker I’ll put one on. Maybe it’s good but have had experience where they don’t work due to being blocked by thieves with technology? ?‍♂️

Haven’t tried these so will have a go in the morning

Actually it's 3 years, warranty is only 2 years.
I found out after I paid £62 to Comfort for breakdown cover.
Are you sure Lenny? If so I'm happy to not have to pay for an extra year!

Yep look in the Fiat books it's there I only found out on Fun, like I said after I'd paid.

Yes, NFU don’t require a tracker. We got our motorhome insured through the Chichester branch. I believe that the cover offered varies depending on which branch you use. They also don’t limit the mileage or the time you’re away from the UK.

I am with NFU with a value of over £75k. No requirement for a tracker but gave me a 15% discount for having one. Also no limit on windscreen. Recovery not included but you don’t need this on a new vehicle with Fiat Camper Assist.

Unfortunately it seems they may have very recently got nervous about new motor business over £75k, they had a couple of very expensive super car claims.

I was with Comfort and renewed our coach build Carthago insurance with them in May at a cost of £450. In June, when we swapped to a Carthago XL (A Class), because of the value (over 100k) they required a Cat 5 tracker with the Driver Recognition token and the ability to disable the vehicle remotely, but also an additional premium of £560. That made over £1000 for 12 months.

I shopped around and NFU provided cover for £575 for the full year and, because of the high value, required the lower grade Cat 6 tracker (just a simple tracker). They did take 24 hours to decide whether they'd insure it or not. I'd already had the higher grade Cat 5 fitted and got an extra few quid off for that. Because their premium was not acceptable, I got a pro-rata refund from Comfort with no quibbles.

Mine is a Global Telemetrics tracker. With lifetime subscription I think the Cat 6 will cost about £500 and the Cat 5 will be close to £1000 (You can subscribe annually if you wish). With the Cat 5 with Global Telemetrics, you can log on to a web page and see your van in almost real time. It maintains a 6 month history too, which you can look back through. You can also set geo-fences and get alerts if it moves into or out of the geo-fence.

NFU have to be worth a try for your new Carthago... nice van by the way (y)

That super car thing, did you hear that from another insurance company/broker? I heard that from one when I was searching out VIN cover, however NFU still covered me once registered at a very good premium too.

I was told that by the NFU office at Brockenhurst when I was upgrading the cover for my new motorhome a month ago. They said there was no problem as I was an existing customer but they had new limits for new customers. He also told me that NFU was looking to expand their motorhome business and thought that by next year they would probably have sorted themselves out. I got the impression that someone had been insuring super cars for £300 and when it went udders up someone else started throwing their model tractors out of the manger.

Similar to that which I heard, insuring Ferraris for silly premiums.

NFU for me. 100k value and no tracker or anything else for that matter.
I’ve always used them for all my vehicles.

Did they refit a new module whilst you were travelling to Denmark n Sweden or when you returned to the UK ?

Why wouldn't you want a tracker??

NFU for us, don’t do comparisons sites and done over the phone but no tracker or alarm required?

We have given up telling Comfort. EVERY Category Five & Category Six tracking system was delisted by Thatcham Dec 2019

If installed before then? Fine, now it simply isn’t approved anymore and should not be installed on a 2019 vehicle. You will need Thatcham VTS

Ours have anti jamming technology, although jamming isn’t the issue many think it is, hence the insurance industries reliance on them

If someone broken into and stole our vehicle I wouldn’t want it back.
having gone through a tortuous insurance claim last year, and that many tracked vehicles are recovered in hours, all intact including the personal effects and contents, I would.

After having read about that system, we are actually planning to travel there when we get our van just to get that system :)
