I would make him a little den over where he sleeps, might comfort him and make him feel more secure until he gets used to van.

Sounds like anxiety
How is yogi just getting in the van and not going anywhere ?
Maybe try doing that for a few days, gradually increase time spent in the van

My little dog did that at first, but if I covered her over completely with a blanket, she was ok.

Eventually she shook it off herself and LOVED being my co-pilot. :). Secure of course.

Hi All,

He actually loves being in the van when it is stationary and does have his own crate when we travel.

He just shakes and pants uncontrollably when we are moving

have you tried a dog pheromone spray,

ours travels well, but when one of the local "female" dogs are in season that appears to have the same effect on him, even though he is now 14 years old. it seems to stop the panting and shaking at least.

My dog behaved like that in his crate, only in the van. Took him out of the crate and he was fine.

Does he like treats? If so, give him something nice to eat and then drive a very short distance with him. The idea is that he will associate travelling with nice thoughts. The very short distances would be increased but very slowly.

It could be due to a noise which is disturbing him, or his not being able to see what's going on, or a myriad of other things - assuming you travel with him in a car where does he go in there? Can he see out? Where do you have the crate in the MH, is it up front with you or in the rear, raised up on a seat or on the floor?

Our dog was a great traveller until we had the blow out that shook the van and was as loud as hell. We tried sprays and drops, bought him a thunder jacket, but he soon worked out that when the jacket went on it meant he was going back in the scary motorhome. We've put his fabric car travelling crate under the table with extra padding on the floor to dampen any noises and rumbles which seems to help ?

Similar but with us it was when we went under a barrier which took the TV antenna off, very loud. She would no longer settle on the seat and constantly tried to reach us. We bought a squishy bed and she's happy in that between the cab seats, secured of course. Still a bit nervy.
Maybe try covering the crate but so he can still see you at the front.

I think I might try one too. My dog barks excitedly whenever we arrive somewhere, drives me nuts.

how apt.
I just went to pets at home today to get a calming spray (i dont like the idea of tablets).

I have 2 dogs, both loved travelling in cars, but not so much on the boat when we had that (as soon as the engines fired up she had to be pushed right up against my side the whole time).
My younger one now pants excessively and drools constantly in the MH, (the other one couldnt care less and just goes to sleep) it has to be the vibrations and bangs from naff road surfaces she doesnt like.

So I got a calming spray to try, sprayed on to a towel below her seat. Hoping it helps.

Our boy was a terrible traveller, was usually sick in the back of the car through anxiety. Vet suggested we leave the car open for him on the drive and feed him in there. Soon got used to the car environment and has travelled really well ever since, even sleeping through an extremely rough 8 hour sea crossing.

Our dog developed the shakes whilst travelling. This is a long shot but have the dogs thyroid activity checked with a blood test at the vet. Did this and found thyroid result was off the scale, a few tablets later and is was back to normal! Just a thought.

Could be motion sickness as well.

Our dog pants when we are moving but she is always the first in the van when we are going anywhere so we just live with it now

Our border is a terrible traveller, she hides if she knows we're going in car, she was the same in our campervan probably worse. I'm convinced it's the road noise and in the camper the rattles. We tried spray and fabric grate, she does not relax at all. Maybe an electric car would be different.

We have a rescue dog the same now she is o.k. If she sits with my wife while travelling.
sometimes my wife has to sit in the back of the car on long trips.
and the other dog can’t be any happier than when he is sat in the front with me …

You could try putting a radio in the cage playing music etc. always helped my dogs on Guy Fawkes nights etc. play loud.

We use Skullcap & Valerian from Dorwest herbs for our beautiful but scatty bulldog. I think losing the crate might be the answer, but if not these might be worth a go. I think you can get drops for a mega hit (when you're about to drive off), but our Maggie's on a small dose daily

I am certainly not recommending this without you speaking to a professional but when our dog started to get allergies we put her on a low does of a piriton based anti histamine . It worked a treat and at the same time calmed her right down

Ours is the same in car and the van, what we have found is if we stop after 15-20mins get her out for a quick walk then set off again she’s fine. I think she’s anxious about where she might be going (the only place she has been in the car is the vets or groomers) and when she gets back in she thinks shes going home.
