Help please.

Not sure but when the MOTs are needed again later in the year, how does it work? I THINK but not sure they may say I need new tyres.

NNormally, if there is a fault on the MOT they pass the vehicle as long as they can do the work there and then but with tyres I would have to come on here and ask advice, order them and await delivery. Is it the case that if the work is 'on order'.. booked in.... for the tyres to be fitted when they arrive, the MOT is passed? Or will I have to pay for a second MOT?

You’ll need an MOT again from August.

If it fails on anything including tyres then you will need to rectify and have a second test, if that test is within 0 working days it’s free

If using the same garage why not get a 13 month mot? You can book the van in a month earlier than its date of first reg and the MOT will last 13 months or if the garage issues a fail you have to take it back the next day after repairs done, if you have a look on the DVLA website it explains what how and where etc and the options ( Use DVLA Gov

So I'm on a loser then if I do need tyres, I may not. As there's no way I could get the tyres ordered and to them in 1 day. :(

I thought I had till October?

Crumbs. Today is not my day is it!

some but not all MOT stations charge for a retest if you take the vehicle away to repair after failing the MOT test
Why do you think the tyres will fail? If they are badly worn or damaged, get them checked by a reputable independant tyre place. If they say they need replacing to pass the MOT, replace them before the test

Sorry mistype 10 working days

@Movan,if your van passes an Mot and the tyres are just OK, they will give you an advisory. If you then continue to drive the van such that the tyres become illegal, ie low tread depth, damage etc and you have a bump due to not being able to stop quickly, your insurance may not pay out.
If your Mot is due up to the end of July, it will be extended by 6 months but you are obliged to keep it in serviceable order which includes the tyres. As said, have them checked out before the mot allowing you time to replace any if required. (y)

Strictly speaking if any vehicle fails an mot you arnt supposed to drive it.

why do you think they might fail, are they very worn,, post some pics of the treads

The 13 year old van I bought had tyres with plenty of tread but the tyre walls were shredding - the tyres were original equipment - 13 years old!

Why not take your van to your MoT garage now and ask their advice? If the sidewalls are indeed shredding or cracked you do need to replace them. Any signs of deterioration at that age means replacement unfortunately. You are heading into unsafe territory.

Agreed. Get them checked a week or so before the MOT, preferably at the MOT garage. Most places will be happy to give an opinion and you are booking the MOT.

(I was going to write 'Especially if you give 'em a lovely smile' but I suppose that nowadays that would be considered unacceptably sexist, which is such a shame :().

I would go with spriddler's suggestion, especially if you have been a customer there before.
Also check the age of the tyre requirements.
Best of luck.

Yes Joy - don't spend money if you don't have to (y) :lips:

If you think you need tyres wouldn't it be best to change them from a safety point of view.
They will pass an Mot with 1.5mm tread depth I wouldn't want to drive a Motorhome with less than 3mm tread depth preferably 4mm. Some countries have a minium tread depth of 3mm in the winter which I think is a good idea.

Joy, take vehicle to MOT station that will do the MOT. Ask if they will pass or fail at the test.
Ask them if needed will they/can they supply and fit prior or at time of MOT Get quote and ask on here giving details of new tyre, price, make, size, specification for Funster’s advice which is impartial and FREE to you.
Maximum price for MOT is class 4 @ £54.85
On the side of tyres is a 4 digit number in an oval shape although not always on both sides! This is its week and year of manufacture.
Send us a picture ie Today would be 2620. !
Five years old would read 2615.

All the above is wasted, your new van bought with your Euromillions winnings will have new tyres anyway (y)(y);)

Thank you all so much for your help. I didn't think they needed replacing but Old Mo said at his meet that the sides looked worn... I will have to find a garage to do the MOT as my usual cost me a fortune last year. I bought 2 new leisure batteries off them, £400, and then they were damaged as they hadn't stopped the solar panel when disconnecting atteries or something like that and so I had to have a new solanoid, etc.,.. The garage had a 'specialist' out who didn't have a clue of the existence of a battery master.. I suspect he was the one who didn't disconnect the solanoid. I had trusted the garage completely until then.

I am fed up of being ripped off with jobs in the house, etc.. They see a woman on her own and that's it.

mike mcglynn will you pm me please with the name of your garage. Thank you.

13 years? I'd replace them anyway, much cheaper than a motorway blowout. Mine were only 8 years old, plenty of tread, but they start to look a little crusty and are ripe for a tread peal.

p.s. the cheapest I found were asda tyres, buy online then nominate where you'd like to fit them. Pro tyre was my choice. I could have bought the tyres from protyre but they were more expensive.

Tyres - Keep a watch on classifieds.. I bought my part worn new nearly ones here..

For MOTS.. a lot of council depots can do Class 4 vehicles as they use a lot.. they don't seem to have a vested interest in bumping up the price.. might be worth a try..

You should be more concerned about your life and others your putting at risk if your tyres are not good.
If in doubt any decent tyre place will give free advice, all the local ones to us are great in that respect.

The second part of your post was good advice, the first part not necessary or needed.

I know where you are coming from, I have a few that I use the garage that looks after may car is run by a woman she has also done the van this year but it will not fit in her garage fr the MOT, But I do have a very straight guy that would look after you but he is in Wales but as as he likes living he would not rip you off. He doing the MOT on my van in December as she has a 6 month extension.

Whether you like it or not tyres are all limited to a 5 year life regardless of tread depth due to the material aging. Beyond that you run the risk of them failing catastrophically. I had just had my 5 year old Corsa tested all all four on the road tyres are cracking so having to be replaced because of their age. Until a few years ago I was ignorant of the age limit. You ask any tyre fitter of repute, they will tell you the same story.

Believe it or not I bought the van from the owner of an MOT Centre ! - True

Of course I believe it, some of us have more sense to run out and replace perfectly serviceable tyres.
