I’m a newbie.
Hi all, just arrived in Blackpool.

Battery light came on a mile or so before I parked.

I don’t suppose anyone would be at hand or know someone who can help in the way of checking an alternator, fan belt etc??

Thanks in advance.

Can’t physically help in that location.

But there are possibly some checks you can do.
I assume you don’t have a multimeter with you?
Do you know what alternator looks like, or where located?
Look under bonnet at left hand side of engine (as you face engine) and see if you can see large metal item 6-8” long. Often with black plastic on back and a pulley on the front. The pulley on the front should have a belt going around it. Does it still have a belt on there? How heavy was steering last night after light came on? Does you habitation display show what voltage your starter/van battery is at? If it does see what it reads, it should ideally be above 12.5v. Then start engine, as you do this check red warning light comes on before starting, then see if it goes out once started, and then see what voltage your display is show your starter battery at. It should now be about 14v.

Look to put yourself on an EHU. That should charge both batteries and give you some breathing space.
Do you have any solar panels? They may do the job today without an EHU but better safe than sorry.

This happens to me on the odd occasion, I just disconnect the earth lead, leave for a min and reconnect and everything’s fine.

Hi all. I have a mobile mechanic removing the alternator as I type.
He’s then off to get a new one and fit it all.

Not the best start to a weekend trip, but (assuming the replacement all goes well), it could have been a lot worse, especially as I was in rural Scotland last month!

All done.
The call out charge was £25.
Cheaper than the later replies I received, which was blended into the overall charge.
I’m unsure what the advertising rules are on here so I won’t post this mechanic’s name unless authorised.

Recommendation is welcome on here as is slatting a company that gives poor service 😊

He arrived when he said he would, diagnosed the problem (broken alternator) phoned a supplier and gave me the prove (which is the same as what I found online), then went to collect it, returned and fitted it.
Charged me £100 labour in total.
Not bad since the others I contacted got back to me with a £50 call out charge!

Where is he based? The card does not say. He might be near enough to me to do work on my drive if needed.

What price the alternator please?

What price the alternator please?
£190.

There is a shop in Preston which has reconditioned ones for £90-£120.
I messaged them last night as well. They did get back to me - and told me that I’d need serial numbers/photo of the old one as I would need 1 of 3 models.

It was more feasible to get the one the new one.

Blackpool
Thanks for the update. I was hoping you might say Preston in which case I am about as far south as Blackpool is west!!
