Good innit.....
You have an old 1960Jag churning out all kinds of crap from its exhaust.
When it was new its road tax was £25, today its tax exempt but it still churns out the same crap and it has all its life.
So... You buy a vehicle with the latest, cleanest engine churning out cleaner air than it sucks in and get penalised to the tune of £2455 in its first year then £495 pa for the next 5 years after which the books will have been cooked and that will be close to the normal annual price anyway.
Buy an old motorhome and shoehorn a 4ltr V8 Jag motor under the bonnet.....you know it makes sense.
The problem (as I see it) the government gave away huge amounts of revenue on the VED when they reduced the levy on cleaner vehicles. I don't think they expected the uptake to be as quick as it was, hence the exchequer was severely down on receipts on this lucrative fund.
The government now find themselves in a bit of a hole, they have encouraged everyone to buy greener cars, on the promise of lower tax, but the government need the tax receipts, so for now, the only way out of the hole is to heavily tax diesel vehicles, due to the particulate output etc.
As the populous moves towards zero emission vehicles in the future, I have no doubt that the VED will be levied in bands according to some other measure, no idea what that will be to be honest. Let's not forget not so long back whether you paid VAT on food items was decided on whether it was served hot or not!!!
Hope this is not the case I am taking delivery of a new autotrail on 1st September It is over the 3500kg weight. Have asked dealer if this is right. If so will be registered now. Grrr

At the end of the day if your new Motorhome costs £80k is an extra £2K in the first year & an extra £200 a year really going to stop you buying it.
