Hi hi hi
Travelling from Calais at the end of the month and are headed towards Germany.

We may have to pop in to Charleroi, Belgium first then we plan to visit the Mosel area and onto, somewhere we have fancied for a long time, Bavaria.

1. We are looking for a pleasant overnight town/ village en route to Charleroi (just south of Brussels) Somewhere smaller where we can wander out for a meal and a beer and have a mosey around.
Suggestions very welcome

2. We have a month and don’t want to be driving the whole time so welcome any recommended ‘must see’ places around that part of Germany or nearby.

3. We are looking forward to trying out the Stelplatzs for the first time.
Is there anything that we should be aware of, sadly we don’t Sprecken see Deutsch!

We don’t often use sites as we mostly stop incognito at quiet roadside locations. So we don’t necessarily need camp site recommendations.

Thank you.

👍👍

I would recommend a stop at Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Absolutely gorgeous walled medeival town often used in films. Also has a Christmas shop and museum

We are currently on our way to Bavaria. Just called into Luxembourg for their cheaper fuel. (164€ -£132 today)
We stuck to the French side the border mostly for the better French supermarkets. This time we are going as far south as Colmar and then turning east through the Black Forest. We have some friends in Mittlwalld we want to see. Highly recommended with a brilliant Stelplatz in the town.
Head for Cocham on the Model loads of places to stop. Travel to Boppard and the ferry across the Rhine. South from there to the Black Forest and Bavaria.

Visited Lake Titisee a couple of years back. Stayed for five days or so and then moved on to Frederichshafen on Lake Konstanz before meandering back via Konstanz and Rhein Falls. I don't "spraken sie Deutsch" either but can point fluently in fourteen languages.

Take a look at this thread which contains loads of information about Covid in September 2020.
I would head straight for page 10+ and ignore many of my posts about the covid situation at the time.
In between you will find 10-20 of us with little to no knowledge of Germany blagging our way through it and learning from each others mistakes.
The map I created has disappeared (still looking for suspects!)

1) nice aire beside the canal, nothing in the village per se however good canal pub with food and plenty of space and free Canal du Maison on Search for sites
2) view thread
3) Dont worry about it, they speak English very well. Keep a quantity of euro and 2 euro coins for the ones that dont take credit cards

Enjoy

We have stayed at Titisee a couple of times too. We were given free rail tickets by the campsite & took the train to Freiburg. They serve fantastic 'Black Forest Gateau' in Titisee......
Triberg is worth a visit too, we saw 'real' nutcrackers (bird similar in size to a Jay)

Make sure you have a good supply of change. A lot of the service bollard will require it usually in 1euro and 50c coins

A must see place I.M.O.is the Warterloo Battle site. (A very small detour on your route). Free parking (Overnight too) in the new car park at the bottom. A very good museum but the best part without a doubt is the battlefield itself. Plenty of signs covering a wide area and a pleasure to walk to. If you time it right you may even see one of their many re-enactments they have throughout the year.
From here you could drive to this Aire on the border with Germany & Luxembourg. Its a fuel station and offers free facilities including overnight stop if you spend €50.0 or more.

For information, we were there last week, the parking is quite close to the motorway and noticeable during the day but no doubt drowns out into background noise at night. We dont know because we ran away. The 17 euros entry fee each, is no doubt worth it for some, but, to us, that is 17 litres of Bordeaux Superior.

Lake Chimiensee, overnight at the sailing club

Berchesgaden, free in carpark number 4 just up the road but walkable back for buses to Eagles Nest

Lake Konigsee
Fussen, and Rhine Falls etc.
All stops listed in download available here

Which reminds me Annie, if I remember rightly you have done the Baltic part of Germany, have you got similar for that for me ?

Chateau de Beloeil is in a nice little village just to the west of Charleroi. The cafe/bar on the corner just before the entrance to the Chateau is to be recommended. (Les cave Du chateau). The chateau has a big car park, not sure if overnighting is allowed, there's a tourist office just opposite with a big car park too.

Streppy boat lift is very close too, another interesting stop and that has an Aire.

I was impressed with the campsite at Hopfersee - hour walk or easy cycle to Fusen and the Konigschloss if you must. Some lovely walks through the woods to various small lakes. It's by the German Alp road and near the romantic road. Both worth a trip.
On way down the Stellplatz by Bad Windheim gets my vote.

Oh, and don't forget Bruges. Definitely worth a visit and several stop over options 🙂

We stayed on the aire a couple of years ago interesting watching watching the boats the aire at thieu didn’t have any services and the village didn’t have much except small intermarche there were a couple of vans parked at the lift would have been more interesting visiting the massive inbev brewery nearby.

Ah, I bow to superior knowledge, When I called there with my son a couple of years ago we only went to see the lift. You can (or could) actually go on a boat ride on the lift. It's a ridiculously massive piece of engineering, worth looking at if your passing I think.
