Back in the late 70s and 80s my hobby used to be collecting, adapting, painting die cast soldiers from the Napolionic wars. Brit Riflemen, French Old Guard, Polish Lancers, etc etc etc, plus famous figures from that period, Napoleon Duke of Wellington that kind of thing. Buy them as a "blank canvas" and research research and paint them as the original squaddie. It was an interesting hobby.
When we left NZ I gave the lot to a Maori mates young son.

Over the years we have kept in touch with the family, my mate died mowing the lawn, his wife has visited us a few time both in Australia and the UK .

So imagine my surprise when I got an Email, from his son, who is now a Captain in the RNZN

"John'll like this!"

A photograph of his young son playing with the same soldiers I gave his Dad long ago.

Looked after two of our Grandkids since just before lockdown started, 5 and 14 months (now 19 months). Parents key workers 200 miles away. The kids go back next week.......am I going to have a long sleep!

Got more DIY to do than ever.

However, new van at the dealers and we should have it on the road first week in September.......stuff the DIY. :giggle:

Made a water feature. 1800 kilo of rocks and 2 enormous bags of soil and 42 concrete blocks. Built the shed out of waney edge cladding and a huge amount of 3x2. Invested in a new router and machined up a load of cedar to make the little greenhouse. All this I have done instead of going skiing in March and then a trip to Portugal followed by following the Tour de France. Ah well, at least my descendants will get a better price for the house when they inherit the lot and then sell it to go skiing etc etc. Sigh.

Restored and chassis rebuild of my Harley. Avoided chemo. Re-furbed one of my rental properties. Moved house, now relandscaping the rear garden before having the central heating and rewiring done over the next couple of weeks. What lockdown, been too busy, yet self isolating, to notice. Oh, and lost a stone in weight.

Lockdown? What’s that?

Worked more hours than normal, as did GP wife, as part of NHS Covid response.

Garden grew wild. House jobs went undone. Kids home from school/uni wearing out the fridge hinges. Not really sure where 6 months has gone!

Oh...I did install a new boiler. And build a cattle race and 150 yards of fencing. But that’s normal weekend stuff. 😎

And got fed up of waiting for gardeners and did it all myself! Even the Mrs couldn’t help, she normally would but has a shoulder out of place since she was hit from behind in her car at a roundabout!
The grass is much better now but have no more photos...

In the six weeks of lockdown I:
Filled the freezer with home baking,
made email contact with friends I hadn't seen or heard from in years,
read every book John Grisham ever wrote (and wished I had read something more worthy),
went on more walks than I have in 6 years, let alone 6 weeks, and nagged the Old Man to join me,
wrote several articles for magazines without the pressure of deadlines,
Zoom, Zoom and Zoom,
spring cleaned the house, garage and garden sheds, even though it was winter,
"spring cleaned" the address book in my computer,
sold a load of old stock from the market stall I used to run,
spent far too long on Motorhome Fun,
and gained far too many kilos.

Extended my new garage then altered the old one to accommodate lazy spa, and learnt to play a guitar a little, it had been stored in the attic for 15 years .

This thread Got me thinking what HAVE I done, apart from binge watching rubbish on tv ...
Baked lots ( sadly all eaten not frozen) planted the veg in veg plot in NEAT rows spaced apart unlike previous years of higgle n piglle. Made a heritage patchwork quilt for daughter , more gardening. Doesn’t seem a lot for the 2 years of lockdown endured...
Oh yes - also spent ages crossing off all the plans on the calendar for holidays festivals trips to friends... sigh
And now feeling very inadequate looking at the previous posts...

I worked out, 😉 if you do absolutely nothing for 12 weeks, you can gain 12kg in weight, so 1 kg a week.😩
And once released and swimming everyday, lost 6kg in 7 weeks I could have lost more but my knee was giving me stick. 😁
Now back in the UK catching up with friends and family drinking proper ale and eating more than I should. 🤔😁 Bob.

That makes you a key worker and part of the national effort too - and a grateful nation thanks you as much as it does your kids. ❤

Still getting started
Fortunately I've continued to work full time during lockdown... but I did manage to keep up playing live music with my friends using a great piece of software called jamulus.

That led into me discovering the wonderful world of DAWs (digital audio workbenches) and setting up the system for a couple of professional music studios to keep working with their collaborators.

Now I'm hooked on virtual instruments.. not always to the delight of my band members :) my use of virtual bagpipes was probably the low point! None of the bands I usually play with have been able to meet since March. This isn't the same as face to face but it keeps us connected.

I learnt how to bake cakes in my air fryer, improved my Thai cooking skills, planted some basil from seeds ordered online, fixed my old 40" LCD TV with Ebay parts posted from Italy and the UK (postage took ages)

In Spain we were not allowed out to exercise so I followed Joe Wicks on youtube. That was essential daily viewing !

Yes I haven’t thought about going to Europe this year. Cancelled our month in China and a month in Norway. Next year maybe...or the year after...or when we feel relaxed about it.
