Hi
Our hab door does not open from the outside. We've discovered its a broken spring in the top locking mechanism that's causing the problem. We are not handy. So first where to source a new spring? and second is it a difficult job to replace.
This is the type of door and its the top mechanism that has the broken spring

We're using the van in a few days is there a temporary solution so we can still go? Any help appreciated.

Is it the kind of spring you could replace using a snoopy loop(s) (circle of rubber bike inner tube) either on own or daisy chained to make a long one?

Maybe this guy can help with a new spring. [Broken Link Removed]

Feel for you. Different van and different problem with the lock. But getting tons of help from other funsters especially Stealaway who is technically able and is having a go at fixing our broken Hartal lock.

Don't know this specific lock, but doubt a spring can be purchased from the manufacturer, will be a matter of finding something with a similar spring or maybe a box off assorted springs(I have a tin inherited from my father who took everything to pieces before throwing stuff away and putting bits in labeled containers just in case he ever needed one) also if it's like most things today it will be spot welder or riveted or held by a plastic clip making exchange very difficult, probably means a new complete mechanism.
wich usually means dealer ordering one and a long wait.
Can't see enough to advise a temporary or possibly permanent work around.Do know if it were in my hand with the aid of my inheritance I could almost certainly do a long term repair !

Glenn.

I had a return spring snap in my door lock. Brownhills would only sell a complete lock. However I contacted Campirama (the Belgian Hymer dealer where we bought our camper) and they said they could supply individual parts. They sent me a photo of the lock with part numbers on it so I could pick the right bit and then ordered it for me. I think it cost a few pounds rather than a few hundred for the whole lock. I know my door is a Baur rather than Hartel, but the procedure should be the same for any Hymer part.

Thanks everyone. I found another post on here somewhere and someone had suggested a temporary fix with an elastic band which we've tried and it works, so Glenn has gone out to find some strong elastic bands. Hopefully that will see us through our trip. It will be frustrating to have to buy the whole lock just for a spring. Two on Tour that link looks like it might be for the right spring, so thanks for that.

Glad you're sorted....happy travels !
I wouldn't say we're sorted exactly because it will need fixing properly, but we're maybe a step closer.

Hi, i used rubber bands to repair our Dethleffs hab door lock. I thought is would get us by for a couple of weeks but it was great and lasted until we sold the van.

I don't suppose you still have a picture of how you used the elastic band have you? Ours is attached to the door handle so not pretty.

If you still have your old spring rebend a hook on the broken spring. It's normally the bend on the spring that breaks.
If that makes sense.
Laurie.

Chris, would you still happen to have a copy of that photo with the part numbers? If so, would you be willing to share a copy? We’ve had intermittent problems with our Baur door lock not opening from the outside which so far we’ve circumvented, hence it would be good to be prepared.
Thanks, Darren

Unfortunately Campirama won't ship to the UK since Bx.

It's a common problem. Both of ours have broken for the third time - same door as yours'. Campirama said we needed a whole new locking mechanism, although they had previously replaced the springs.
We ordered new springs via the Hymer Owners' Group on FB, and had them fitted by Knights of Arley. If you're more competent and confident than we are , you could probably wrestle the plastic inner from the door, but Knights of Arley charged us about £40 for the job. We watched them do it, but there's no way we'd attempt it ourselves. I can thoroughly recommend them if you're Midlands based.
Anyway, we're now in the position where we agree with Campirama that we need a new locking mechanism, so we'll be getting the lot replaced.
I can't help with a temporary solution. We're fortunate in that we have Abus locks as well.

A metre of spring wire is only a couple of quid on ebay, and easy to bend a replacement. A metre of wire is enough to make several

I got springs for my hab door from this guy .same spring as Gellynecks in this thread but little different to yours .

Darren we got a new spring through someone on FB Hymer owners group. I can look him up for you if you want. Ours is still fixed with an elastic band. I can't find the pic of how you do it with elastic though.

Thanks Hilary & Glenn, we don’t currently have a problem but I suspect we might in the future given we likely have the same/similar Baur door as Chris & Carolyn. I was hoping the pic with the part numbers might be a useful reference should we have a failure.
