Hi all

I know I have asked this before a few years ago, but have only just been able to be able to do it, due to deaths, vans, injuries etc.

We are in a camper and want to go over this pass, which way - there or back not sure yet. We want to go into Germany and Austria, just a bit on way. Does anyone have a good route and places to stay on either side of the pass. We then want to just skirt the top of Italy. We try and avoid motorways, no rush.

Any useful help and advice would be good. Thanks

Were off that way next week!! There’s a free aire at the top (Kaiser Franz Josefs Höhe) although you have to pay the toll of the road!!
I think it’s best going from the north to south!

We stayed at zell am see in Austria before doing the pass south to north.
Unfortunately although we set off in sunshine, the pass was cloudy and rained, saw almost nothing

When we went over it I'm sure it said there was no stopping overnight anywhere along the route.

Done the grosglockner on a harley a fantastic ride the hairpins where great riding but it was very busy when I was there end off August 2012.Very lucky the day we went fantastic weather but next day the pass was closed due to snowfall overnight would love to ride it again

We were going to do it a few years ago, but met some Italians who said to try the Reschner Pass instead. Which we did, was lovely and plenty places to stay.

Did it a few years back. Stayed at Sportcamp Woferlgut in Bruck. Didn't take the van over took a coach trip instead. I think it was better as it did give you time to look around and obviously they knew the best places to stop for viewing etc. Another option.

The only way. Who wants to hear all the pots and pans disintegrating in a MH.
You might have a finely tuned ear Brian.. Hardly Movings sound like pots and pans to me ( albeit BIG ones ! )

Yes there are many other passes, many of them are spectacular but IMHO you need to do the grossglockner at least once in your life.

careful on the way down, its hard on brakes.

Hubby wants to do this one, so this one it is. In a camper, the dog might not like all the twists and turns though. She will squash herself between front seats.
It’s like Ben Nevis, you have to do it once (or 4 times).

Make sure to do it on a day when the weather is good and you won't regret it! (y)

Will definitely do that, but you know what the weather can be like. He watches the weather, just had the best ever week in scotland and week in Lake District. Scotland was covered in bluebells. Dog lived the the water.

Bit late I know, but we did the trip over the mountains and far away, it was a fabulous holiday, dog loved it too, she even went on chairlifts, weather was fantastic too.
Was going out again that way this year till covid cropped up, probably won’t get abroad this year. It was to be the easiest for us with dog as that will be more complicated next year. But, hey, we’re here, some not so lucky.
Stay safe everyone still.
