Not sure if this story has been posted, but according to the Daily Express, the Government is changing the country identifier rules again and in future all British registered vehicles going abroad will need to display a 'UK' on the number plate (or separate sticker?) instead of GB.

"By the end of the year, all Britons must show these letters somewhere on their vehicle before leaving the country."

"The new rules on vehicle signs will come into place on September 28, marking the end of the summer holiday season."

"If Britons fail to display the letters UK somewhere on their vehicle when abroad after the end of September, they will be fined."

Excellent so all of us who bought GB stickers for our number plates having Brexited, now need to change them yet again after less than a year?

In some respects this does make sense since most of Europe refers to us as United Kingdom (or some foreign pronunciation). Great Britain and it's empire ceased to exist decades ago.

Have I understood this correctly?

Whilst I am abroad I have to display UK or HMG will fine me?

Just wondering about the jurisdiction
According to the paper:

If Britons fail to display the letters UK somewhere on their vehicle when abroad after the end of September, they will be fined.

But the penalty will depend on the law of the country concerned.

So no, apparently it is the country you are visiting / travelling through that will determine the fine.

We certainly aren’t “Great” any more, so maybe just Briton.
I’m not sure you understand why we’re known as Great Britain. It’s got nothing to do with greatness in the context you appear to be taking it. It’s to do with size. Unless of course you think the islands have shrunk.

Country identifier initials are ruled by the Geneva Convention of Road Traffic 1949 and The Vienna Convention 1968. The codes are allocated by The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, not our government. UK government can decide what we put on our UK number plate, but the rest of the world will require a separate GB sticker as well when we visit their country.

can the letters be part of a word, If they can I think I could live with that

The C&MC will issue them for free if you book a ferry crossing or take out travel insurance
I’ve always had just plain number plates and used a GB sticker

It’s been GB on the plates in some shape or form for donkeys years. Why the need to change it now?

Only one island. Great Britain is the single island comprising Scotland, Wales and England (not even the Isle of Man).

The UK includes Northern Ireland. (but still not the Isle of Man)

No matter, the great still doesn’t mean great in the context of the poster I replied to thinks it does. It still regardless of your pointing out it only means the big island, refers to size. It goes back to differentiatiating between the area of France and our island.

So did slavery but Great Britain was a leader in the slave trade.
I suspect his change will be more about black slaves and past racial history than being recognised as a seperate country.
