I'm a newbie
So, I got an Email from Google. You are receiving this email because you turned on Location History. So curiosity got the better of me and I opened it up to my surprise they have a map of all my travels around the UK tines and dates of places I visited. As an example Brockenhurst Sun 29th Sep Walking 43min Terrace Café Brookley Rd Brockenhurst 13.35 -14.26. and it is the same for all the other places I have visited Scotland Wales and England. So at some point I must have been mucking about with my phone and turned this on. Quite scary how much information Google has on you. However quite nice to see all the places we have visited over the year. So now the dilemma is do I leave it on or turn it off.

It also follows you around the world, I have red dots where I had forgotten that I had been. Great tool I would leave it on..(y)

Yes, leave it on. Handy record of where you've been and when. (y)

Big Brother is watching us.

If you turn it off I don't think you can use Google maps at all.
Very interesting to see places you have visited years ago and almost forgotten about.

If I was the police though and wanted to know your whereabouts, the first thing I would ask for would be access to your Google account, kind of scary in a way.

Graydo

P.s I believe it's on by default.

Is there anyway of showing all the places on a map? I can get info on separate days, but would like to see a map with all places marked on in!

My son is currently in India and using the location sharing facility I know exactly where he (his phone) is (assuming 4g works) . I find it a comfort

It only gives the whereabouts of your phone at any time.

Sorry, but you still need a better alibi ...

That‘s exactly what I get too and, on that basis, concluded that it was a waste of time.

However, if we can access it in the manner described by others it’d be quite interesting.

Here's mine , the more you zoom in the more you get.

the tracking of your phone or other device is not evidential of itself of your personal location at any particular time or date. It just notes that your device was located via an internet or phone signal within an approximate area

I can see it as useful for a business to check times and dates for employees like service engineers or drivers. But it is of limited use personally and could be a security risk, if accessed by others to see where you probably are

The tracking of a family member sounds good, but is potentially illegal to do without specific consent

I wonder if it’s because I use the app or because it’s on an iPad that I can only see a day at a time?

It is also worth noting that They can track you even with GPS off in certain circumstance.

Say you connect to a public wifi point, if someone else has connected to it before and had location data turned on you are therefore at a known location within 100 metres.
If your phone can detect multiple cell phone towers then it can triangulate your location.

These are just two examples of ways that companies can track your location without GPS turned on.

Google or Apple I believe got caught logging WiFi SSID and their location some time ago and got slammed for it. I now believe that location tracking turned off does mean that google/apple don't track you. But naughty apps are regularly caught logging location info even with it turned off.

Facebook is one I don't trust. Remember everytime you check in at a location or say you are meeting a friend you are giving a little bit away from which a bigger picture can be achieved.

Is tracking a good thing or a bad thing? That is a philosophical question you can only answer for your self. For some the thought of being watched wherever you are is no issue, and for others it is just plain creepy.

My above post makes no moral judgement on the companies involved in tracking.

Like the guy in an NCIS episode some years back. Threw the phone into the Garbage truck, and had the whole team converge on a Landfill site!.!!!

Tis worrying. I sometimes use a VPN to watch foreign TV channels and occasionally I get denied because I'm in the UK. There are numerous ways you can be tracked. Especially your IP address ( even using a VPN).

I quite like It and don't mind being tracked now I have nothing to hide ;););)
Also I think they use the data for their live traffic maps which I find really useful for checking the local traffic before setting off.

None of my Devices have it enabled. I think watching the Film "Big Brother" when it first came out, had a long term effect on me. I really (if I think about it) have nothing to hide, I just don`t like the idea?. My "private" life is my concern, no one else`s. The only "tracking" I do is of the motorhome, as a theft deterrent, and the little "dongle" on the Dogs collar, which lets me see roughly where she is should she get lost.

They have been tracking me since 2013 and only found out today.

IP addresses can only be used to pin point country and even then it is not 100% garanteed. If a US company for instance uses it's own network range to provide a service in the UK then it will appear that you are in the U.S. when using their service. IP's are not geographically limited in any way.

As the IPv4 range has now been exhausted expect more and more companies to actually lease their IP ranges from other companies and this will take part worldwide not by region.

PS: I just got curious. Back when I had a hosting company I paid for a full class C network. I have 213.232.100.0-255. I remember that ip range off the top of my head :)

Just did a whois and it is now registered to a German company. Looks like someone else had it between 2015 and 2018.
