I'm a newbie
Hi all

we are hiring a campervan and going to Pembrokeshire in May this year.

Would be great to get some recommendations for places to stay, preferably near the coast.

I have read that there is limited free overnight parking places, is that true? If not can anyone recommend any of those too please?

Any helpful advise would be appreciated.

Thanks

When we toured Pembrokeshire, we stayed on many CLs, there are lots dotted around the coast. You have to be members of the CAMC though. Then you can see where they are and phone them for a pitch. Worked well for us.

There are a couple of campsites in St David’s that are coastal and easy walk into town.

Basic but nice.

Friends of ours love this one.

Sloping field. Plenty of facilities. But, a bit more campsite rather than touring.
Brilliant views over the sea.

You will not find many free parking places for overnight stays.
There are plenty of cl, s worth a shout. Sites are plentiful also but won't be cheap during any school holiday period.

If you want a basic cl on the outskirts of St David's and walking distance to whitesands Bay then Towyn cl which is opposite the golf course.
Great walks from the cl and a 30 minute walk into St David's. But it is basic.

Over the last two years, with covid and the increased numbers of vanlife staycationers, the possibility of free overnighting in Pembrokeshire has massively reduced. All council and National Parks carparks now state no overnight camping / sleeping, and it has been strictly enforced, especially during the busy season. Similarly, double yellow lines have appeared on coastal stretches of road.

Like everywhere, campsite prices have also risen and show no signs of reducing again anytime soon.

Whereabouts in the county are you interested in?

We have stayed at Caerfia site a couple of times. It is right on the cliff tops with access to the cliff path . The little bay just below the site is a steep path down but nice.
There was no shop on site but it’s not too far to walk into St Davids for lots of nice shops and a supermarket. There are buses along the coast in both directions from the visitor centre at the main road.
If you are walking types the walk to Solva and bus back inset too difficult. An alternative walk is to Whitesands bay coming back through St Davids.

I live in Pembrokeshire and tour here a lot. It is beautiful and there are loads of sites. I use searchforsites and local information.

I would recommend Caerfai (St Davids) Newport, Newgale, Angle, Manorbier, Tenby and Saundersfoot, Cenarth Falls. PM me and I can recommend sites.

In May you will have to pay for coastal locations.

There are many free pub stops with cracking pubs but they are normally inland a bit.

Start learning some Welsh. It always goes down well in rural locations.

Pembury country park. Haven’t been for a few years but booked through the local council.
A great place, flat, massive beach, woods to walk and ride in, park, crazy golf, horse ridding and a ski slope, but not over crowded.
We’ve been several times and love it for both couples of families.

But that's in Carmarthenshire, not Pembrokeshire.

Hi, we are hoping to to do a tour from Tenby to Fishguard, sticking to the coast as much as possible

Have a look at Pencarnan Farm Camping and Caravan site which is around a mile from St David's. It has it's own private beach, we were there last summer and can recommend it (y)

Just been on their web site, they're now asking stupid money! We won't be back!

Newgale is good for the beach-miles of it just over the road, but if weather is bad it’s an awful place to be and floods a lot!
St D’s is a lovely small city with its Bishop’s Palace ruins and a very striking church!
Newport just up the coast is good, nice beach.
Find the ‘Blue Lagoon’ further up the coast, you can park there behind the sea defences but I don’t think you can overnight there. Lagoon itself is a little walk round the coast corner and very impressive. It was mining originally but the sea broke thru and it had to be abandoned with machinery still in place. You can still see the ruins of the workers cottages.
Pembs is a lovely county and the coastline is fabulous.

Newgale campsite - as you say - you can't get closer to the beach, but it resembles a third world shanty town when it flash floods (you should be ok in May). The young surfer crowd, the proximity to the Duke of Ed pub, plus the recent addition of a pizza van and coffee stall can make it a bit noisy and festival-like in peak season - this may, or may not be to your liking!

The Blue Lagoon parking at Abereiddy beach has caused a lot of disquiet over the last couple of years, with the National Park allowing a private coasteering company to essentially take it over for their business. See - https://www.westerntelegraph.co.uk/news/19043005.abereiddy-car-park-changes-approved/

If you want camping near a beach we used to take our young kids caravanning at Trevayne. It's a farm campsite, but with decent facilities, between Tenby and Saundersfoot (coastal path), with direct access onto Monkstone beach (although a steep descent on steps down to it). Lots of memories of driftwood fires in the evening.

Newgale beach has a camping field right next to it.
Just be aware that the low part can flood and if you go up the slope the water runs down in bad weather. Beautiful location other than that.

Morawelon Waterfront Bar, Restaurant & Campsite - Parrog, Newport 01293 820565 - Familly owned by lovely people - Wonderful sea views - one of my all time favourite sites

We stayed at your first recommendation a few years ago and loved it. We weren’t really fans of Wales prior to the trip to South Wales. I have always gone to north wales in the past for the mountains. Which are fantastic but the weather and quite often locals put me off after a few trips.
The South Wales locals are lovely and friendly. We’ll definitely be going back to the Pembroke area in the future.

See few people have suggested Newgale, we stayed at Newgale Farm which is on the hill, great views of Newgale Beach. You will find details in search for sites. We were able to walk along coastal path from this site. Can also walk down to Newgale beach from site.

Caerfai Bay is nice and a simple walk into town. But if its blowing a south westerly you don't want to be there....
It has a teriffic view because its open and exposed.

Marloes is one of our favourite places.
Unfortunately not the access to any real town but nice pub, cafe and post office shop

I’m currently staying at Wenallt Farm tearooms and campsite in north Pembs, just outside Newport. I come to Pembs a lot as I have long-term links here, and have tried many sites local to Newport, but this is my first time here and is definitely the best. Flat field, spotless showers/loos, freezer and microwave if you need it, quiet at night even though it is not far off the main road - just the owls to lull you to sleep! All for £10pp per night plus £1.50 per dog if you have one. Brenda is lovely, and there is a pub a short walk along the road. I shall come again!
