Hi all,

Last year we purchased a Huawei E5577 to enable us to get wifi in our van and because of the lack of understanding of the user (i.e. me!!) it wasn't much use. So before we venture out on a trip to France I thought it best to do a bit more research to try and get to the bottom of the matter!
Other than a problem with the sim card (which I hope to have sorted) I'm thinking that we probably need an antenna of some description to get the best out of it. I've seen some good information on the motorhome wifi website but before getting to the point of spending a lot of money, I just wondered if any fellow members had any hints and tips which could help?

Thanks in anticipation!
Cheers

Hi, we have the same Huawei E5577 on 3 with a 40Gbt data package which we use to watch TV on via a Amazon Fire Stick and Virgin TV to GO, not had any problems in the UK, but we are going to Spain this year so not sure what signal will be like so I have got from E Bay a couple of external aerials to try first to see how they perform only cost £15 for both, on the E5577 there is a cover over the external aerial sockets you will need an aerial that has TS9 connectors, we have looked at getting a WIFI aerial on the roof but being put off by the cost at moment

Thanks Phil. I've seen the aerials and wondered if they'd be any good, hence my post. Let's see what information we will hopefully get! Thanks for the information within your reply. David

Really depends on where you do most of your camping. I fitted a Poynting MIMO antenna great for when you are in remote mountain areas when either of our phones can't pick up a signal. Also good for pulling in a 4G signal when you would only normally get 3G. Biggest gains are in upload speed.

Ours works very well all over Europe with no probs. Seem to get more probs in the UK. We only use it for our (not smart )phone and checking on emails etc on our iPad and very little downloading.

Thanks. Is that with or without an aerial?

An additional antenna isn't essential, mifis are designed to work without one as they have one internally. However, in areas of poor signal an external antenna will improve the signal and may pick up a signal when the mifi on its own can't. As you haven't really used your mifi yet I suggest just giving it a try on its own. You can often improve the signal by moving the device to another position in the MH. Beware, if you are going somewhere very hot leaving it in full sun, it can get very hot!

If you haven't done it yet download the Huawei app and work out how to use it to select different networks. My Vodafone sim tends to select Orange here in France but sometimes I can get a much faster connection using SFR.

If you want near guaranteed reception then an external antenna is the way to go. I've also got the Poynting MIMO-1 but if you tend to go to populated places like towns you probably won't need one. Which is why I suggest trying the Mifi on its own first and see how you get on. :)

Hi, would second what DBK, said get the Huawei APP,you can see what data you have used and what devices are connected to the router and I have change the names on them so know who connected and Also with E5577 you can have 10 devices connected at the same time which for me is good with 4 Mobiles 3 tablets and the Amazon Fire stick is great.

That's a great help

We have never needed an external antenna, generally the coverage in the UK is the least but that's probably because you can use a wider variety of suppliers when roaming. In the UK you're pretty well stuck with whoever the sim came from.

We've used ours in France, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, Austria , Slovenia, Italy, Croatia and never needed an antenna. Everywhere we've been we have streamed BBC tv and watched footy matches uninterrupted. Laptop or tablet I always get an admin screen coming up when I turn it on, I then have to type in a username that is default admin and then a chosen password. That enables me to then go online. You probably as Hampshire Lad has said need to go into admin and set it up properly.

We don't need to log in with ours when we turn it on. It just connects automatically with a local network and our devices then have access to the internet. It all happens seamlessly.

The only times I need to go into the admin side is when we enter a new country when I have to get it to search for networks and then choose one manually. I also do this occasionally when it connects but the signal is slow. Changing provider sometimes helps and just a few times selecting a strong 3G signal is better than a weak 4G one.

Our mifi works fine without an aerial if you had problems before why buy an aerial if signal strength isn't the problem? They are not very user friendly in terms of accessing the user controls. We keep all the passwords user names etc on a label inside the lid as we don't frequently use it and forget otherwise and as its not particularly valuable aren't too worried about getting oit nicked!

Ditto, inside label covered in passwords etc.

Thanks all for your responses which have been really useful. Thank you- I have a plan for getting an aerial following Lenny HB's post, but will firstly try it over the next couple of weeks without an aerial as the majority seem to be having success without one. And of course I'll be copyrighting the blue tack method.....:)

So to Phil 748, Cheshirecat57, Lenny HB, Reallretired, Hampshire Lad, Parrot Face, The Wino & DBK.....Thank you all.(y)

I had one of these up high on front side RV made a huge difference to signal compared with not plugged into Huawei mifi , both in UK and Europe , including on move JMHE
