now that's got your attention!
base vehicle is an X250 and the pic attached is where the current horn is:
not mine just a pic lifted from the interweb.

so does anyone know if the activation method by pressing the steering wheel is earth return(makes contact through steering wheel to earth) or does that cause +12v to flow through the horn to earth?
yeh i know i can test it with a meter but it looks like i will need several more joints in my arm to just to disconnect the wires from the current horn.
on a related topic anyone know if relays and specifically pins 85 and 86 are interchangeable for earth or do they only allow + on 86 and earth on 85?
thx if u can help.

It would make no difference in practice...
Can't help with the horn switching on a fiat but the transit is a switched supply if me memory is correct..

I've added an air horn to mine, and rewired both through a relay so they work only when the ignition is on. If I remember correctly, the horn button on the steering provides +12v to the horn cable. On my A-Class the easiest access to the back of the horn is from underneath.

Can't be sure about the relays, but I agree with @andy63 that it doesn't make any difference.

The relay I ordered to do the job arrived today and I can confirm the relay is happy to switch whichever way POS and neg are connected to pins 85 and 86. Thx both
Looks like I'll have to go for it to find the polarity of the horn switching then.

Its always annoyed me that the horn on our 30' 5tonne MH is the same puny effort that is fitted to a Fiat 500 and is embarrassingly weedy.
I was going to fit air horns but we are selling the MH instead

OK OK found the diagram i needed.
Attached for future use to any one with the same question.
C010 is the front earth point so positive feed through the horn to earth.
That means i can use the same replacement horns for my tracker alarm.

So pressing the horn activates a relay coil by grounding it and the relay then supplies the already grounded horn with a supply....

Many years towing and Moho since 2004, presently Adria Coral 690SP Platinum.
Isn't it amazing that the Italians seem to thrive/drive on using their vehicle horn rather than brakes and yet the FIAT horn is probably the most puniest motor horn on the roads.
