I'm looking forwards to the challenge of finding FON spots. They are pretty sparse but I think I'll have some success apart from the more remote spots with little habitation.

How easy is it to avoid the Umwelt zones in Germany, if you're not planning on going into cities? Do they just cover the inner cities, or are the Autobahns running past the major cities affected?

I'm sure mine would be a "yellow" sticker. Too old !

It's on page one. There is a route to follow for non badge holders.

http://www.reisemobilhafen-koeln.de/umweltzone.html

From Aachen, Krefeld or Neuss:

A57 to end of motorway, then take the left lane (direction Zoobrücke / Messe), after about 1500 m before Zoobrücke turn right (towards Zoo / Flora) , straight through the intersection until Rheinuferstraße (Dutch bank), there at the traffic lights, after about 800 m behind "AXA turn skyscraper" right (turning lane in the parking lot) The entrance to the parking lot is on the right from the parking lot towards the Rhine

NOT all cities have emission zones

No more getups! Greeted wifey from work with Champagne and holiday heads on now

I really like the look of Sankt Goar after Koblenz and Loreley Blick followed by Bacharach as suggested by Martin in the other thread (y)

We had a night there on the way back up in July.

I think there's a sort of campsite opposite on the top of the bank but not looked into it. It's way up and would have good views. Edit. Yes. Loreley Campingplatz. There's an Amphitheater up there built by the Nazi Pary in the war.

We did the Rhine in Flames at Loreley Campingplatz, great!! Included wine festival. Check if your dates coincide, but get there at least day before as the site gets very full. Lovely area for the bikes

Hope you have a good time. We were disappointed with the left bank, as you travel south, of the Rhine after the stunning Mosel and its towns and villages last year. No bridges south of Koblenz until Mainz. Stellplatz's can be noisy if by the river as there is a railway running along the river on both sides and lots and lots of freight. Might have just be us and got in the wrong frame of mind then rushed south to get somewhere better.

Have a great trip :)
