Hi
We are having problem entering sat nav co ordinates into our Garmin campervan sat nav . The format appears to be wrong but they are copied from the free stopover Michelin guide for Portugal and many of the coordinates are in the same format . Can anyone help thanks

Example of coordinate for Porto

008*47’20”W 37*51’09”N

What is your Garmin requesting?
I assume you will just need to swap format in the garmin.

I have the Garmin set on automatic so was expecting it to find the format I am entering
The other options to manually select are
Austrian grid
Borneo RSO
British national grid
CH1903+
Custom grid
Epc Hungarian grid
Estonian grid
FRENCH GRID ……
I may have just answered my own question . The Michelin free camper stopover map we copied it from was French so I will now select French grid

Incidentally if it works the Michelin free camper stop map is amazing lots of stopovers and very detailed . We borrowed it one evening from a French couple and spent a couple of hours route planning and copying co ordinates . There was also a similar Michelin map for a number of other European countries . I looked on Amazon but all out of stock so must be popular
Thanks

No didn’t work . The French grid format is
E-*******
N0*******

You probably need to go into 'Settings' and change the format.

A Google search will help.

Lat/long coordinates are provided in at least 3 formats.

It is an annoyance.
Formats here: http://geomidpoint.com/latlon.html

Your Garmin is set for the Degrees minutes seconds format.

It looks like you have he decimal format ready to put in.

It’s not related to being in France.

When I go into input coordinates in my garmin it gives me choice When I tap the spanner icon

Hi the ddd mm' ss.ss" option is the one
To enter your coordinate for Porto would be:

N 37° 51' 09.00" and W 008° 47' 20.00"

The coordinates are GPS nothing to do with grids, the formats are just different ways to input the same info.

if it's the same model as the avtex tourer 2 give them a call very helpful when i had a problem.

Ah, coordinate decimalisation fun. It's all latitude longitude (technically it's WGS84). It's like converting prices in £sd to £ with decimal places.
The coordinate you provided for Porto is in degrees, minutes and seconds with decimal places (the third option in Manic's screenshot).

I think Garmins default to degrees and minutes with decimals.

If you take the 20 seconds and 9 seconds at the end of the Porto coords, and divide by 60, it gives you the value in minutes, 0.33 and 0.15. Add this to the end if the minutes.

008*47’20”W 37*51’09”N
Becomes
008*47.33W 37*51.15N

(They're normally the other way around BTW)
