Garden Centres remain open (again )

Peeps will be at home so centres essential I think. We have to have something to do and with spring coming along maybe gardens are essential for mental health?

If the ground thaws and we can work in the garden again (mid feb) then that will be a bonus.

How many people who normally go to the pub and the bookies do you know go to a garden centre for their mental health. Haha
We do , continually , like plant crack eds

Going to a garden centre is (for most) a "leisure activity", thus non-essential.
The idea you have to go to one or to a DIY warehouse for your mental health is tosh.
Go for a walk.

Essential should mean essential ie food & water.

The tighter the lockdown, the more effective, and the shorter it needs to be.

Well I went into Ayr today for food shopping, we are not allowed to do the following 'You must not travel outside your local authority area.
Really, well I have news for them, I travelled from east Ayrshire into south Ayrshire because although we have small local shops our nearest shopping centre is in Ayr.
Going there means I go into one big shop that has tons of space for social distancing and fill our freezer up instead of repeated visits to small local shops with no space for avoiding others.
The other thing I noticed was that Currys are shut except for collections, yes you can order online, the trouble there is if it is urgent you can forget it.
BUT some things in there are essentials, a carpet shop next door was open!.....Now that makes no sense to me.

Different people do different things to relax.

As much as I like a good walk, doing work around the house/garden keeps me on the ball.

I work in the building trade but still do work on our house 😉😊

Most of the people who frequent garden centres will have had their jabs in a week or two
Most garden centres are just cafes that sell a few plants
:o They'll be flogging off Xmas stuff to clear there shelves for Easter bits.
based on West Berks' garden centres. 🤔

Not seen a small garden centres just relying on plants & pots around here.

Not here ... the list of ‘essential shops’ has been tightened.
Its not working though is it? Scotland has had consistently stricter restrictions and AFAICS are in no better place than England.

It could be a boom spring for garden centre. With people off the centre will have plants for sale to early which people will buy and plant. Then a cold snap and they all die forcing them to buy more plants, yes could be a boom spring.

Now with added ‘Sainsbury’s’.......(at least around here).....;)

I was surprised to see Garden Centres are still classed as essential and can remain open under the new Lockdown rules announced tonight . Good for mental health 👍🏻
If The Range and B and M Bargains can stay open i should think its fair that all shops can stay open,, BUSBY.

It's a mockery, simple as.
It they [the government] were serious, it should be supermarkets only open - they have all the "essentials".
The rest is simply want to have rather than need to have.
Then it really would only be necessary for a few weeks.

I have occasionally popped into a garden centre, it's not for me. I get great pleasure from growing the plants from seeds etc. Pricking out, nurturing that delicate seedling, taking it as an affront when one fails, giving them the equivalent to intensive care!
Ordering seed via my seed club, knocking up my own seed beds and steaming the bedding etc. Joy being alone with my charges and watching them grow.
Garden centre essential well not for me, you may be different and need an instant corporate offering and draining your pocket as an alternative to modern day blood letting.

As a gardener by trade I would class them essential for continuing my job.
Sadly not for those like my mum who will go because she’s allowed. Then is quick to moan moan moan about extended look down. The amount of times she thinks it’s ok to just pop around. Crazy

My mum is the same and she has copd. She has been to Tesco on a Saturday evening because it’s quieter....tried to explain it only needs one person. Doesn’t matter how many are in the store. She does my head in. My dad is perfectly capable of shopping. My other moan is the cafes providing takeaway food and drinks, who really needs to queue for an expensive Costa latte and a panini ? Not really essential and it only encourages people to meet up and chat.

Even the strictest and best enforced lock down would only put the genie back in the bottle for it's duration. It started originally with a very few people and will always restart that way.
The way out of this is full vaccination, so the virus can be passed between people with immunity without ill effect. I despair at the number of people I regard as otherwise sane saying they don't think it's worth it because you can still pass it on, or won't take it because of some crap they've read online.

Sounds familiar .

Before they got closed again up here the garden centers seemed very busy going by the car parks
I am wondering if a lot of the older folk think I'm at an age where there is a high chance I could die of something and coved is just one of a lot of things that may get them?
Garden centers were somewhere they could meet up with their pals legally and they can gripe about everyone else not following the rules
I have spoken to one who said they have been eating out a lot more as they are not able to have their friends in at home

I wonder why the powers that be in control of this farce have deemed it ok for Garden Centres and parks to be allowed open but have shut Zoo's, all set in in wide open spaces, plenty of room for exercise, obviously the cafes and animal houses should be closed.
The mind boggles we are being controlled by a bunch of idiots, Lockdown and Tier systems haven't worked in the past so why do they think it will work next time.
We know the virus thrives in colder climates so what did they expect to happen when temperatures dropped?
