I'm not sure why so many fine Funsters go to extraordinary lengths to organise club meetings when all we need to do is find a very picturesque car park and take it over for an undetermined period.

Nicky and I went to Redcar today (NE coast) and found a gathering of travelling folk all with their posh vans, 19-plate Landy Discos and silent generators taking up eighty seperate parking slots.

This is a paid car park from May-Sep inclusive but I'm sure that the authorities will leave well alone.

(I got a wee bit carried away with the pics) :D

But at least the place is clean and tidy !
You sure it was not a club meet of some sort ?
We regularly get a big meet from the Netherlands on on of the commons here
They look like travellers with there white vans etc but are lovely folk ..

They were all Irish plates except where the Landrover Discoveries and Audis had UK plates :D

Well at least they cannot pay cash for a (the) plot of land, Move 3 vans on, and hardcore the plot, bring in Portaloos, THEN apply for permission for a "Dwelling". Whilst they are waiting for said "Dwelling" permission, (which they know they will never get, as it has been refused in the past, and why the land was cheap) They continue to harden the site and bring in several more `vans (now there is at least 8). When the Planning is refused (as it will be) they can appeal. This drags the issue out for a few years, at which point they can ask for "retrospective use" of the De-Facto "Itinerant" site they have established. A case that will be fought along "racism" lines, so as to muddy the waters and frighten the authorities into subjugation for fear of being branded as a "racist" organisation.

Currently happening Near a Village in the East Riding.

A small group of travellers has been moved on after concerns over the possible impact on Great Yarmouth's Wheels Festival.

The group, made up of one caravan and two vans, arrived on Wednesday (July 3) at the Marina Centre North car park, where one of the festival's main attractions, the Wall of Death, is to take place over the weekend.
After discussions with the borough council and police, the travellers moved on Thursday (July 4) to part of the Beach Coach Station car park.

Norfolk does different! - Gordon

When we tried to park in Redcar a couple of years ago, there was a 2 tonne weight limit on their car parks.

We must remember.
There are different rules for different people. There are the people who pay through the nose and smile, us, and the Itinerants. Everyone appears to be afraid to confront them. Don't worry though when the garden ornament have all vanished they will to.

...and were they doing you any harm?

JJ

An interesting comment indeed.

They look to be a very disciplined troop of travelling folk but, that being said, why should I have to pay a few quid for parking in one slot when they'll probably refrain from paying any money for the 80-slots over their 5-day stay.

The locals have decided to avoid the car park so there's a few more hundred pounds of lost council revenue while the non-gypsy folk are having to walk around the temporary encampment as they are far too intimidated to walk through it, which, incidentally, is a public right away and an internal road within the car park itself.

In conclusion the council and the tax payer (indirectly) are losing a 4-figure sum of money per day and yet they don't have the money or the resource to politely move them on.

.....so yes it does effect me and in a very small way it absorbs some of my tax money too.

Footnote: Nicky and I would love to camp out on the seafront but if we did then after only 1-night the local warden would slap a 100-quid fine on our windscreen.

Enough said.

Most folk avoid them. However the biggest issue is the inevitable tons of rubbish, old vehicles, and excrement that will have to be cleared away when the DO decide to move on. All at a cost to the local tax payers. I have long held that a limit of no more than 24 or 36 hr, with a daily charge levy. After which confiscation of the vehicles and impounding. Pending ultimate sale to realise the costs of clearing up.

There is a regular annual encampment at a store car park near Edinburgh. They use the end of the car park furthest from the store (nearly always empty the rest of the time), leave the place cleaner than when they arrived and also spend money in store. The store manager told me the shop lifting was no higher than any other time. They are not "welcome" as such but tolerated as they do not cause a nuisance and move on after a week or ten days. When I walked through (between the train station and Asda) I made a point of stopping and talking to one of the ladies. She was very pleasant :). She also told me they were Romany rather than "rough travelers" (her words). I did wonder if the store car park was on or near one of their traditional stopping places.

I made enquiries when researching for a MHF rally a couple of years ago :)

Yup... massive difference.
With Romany in the family and lots of ties, I can assure you pucka Romany will have nothing to do with rough travellers
They loath them simply because of all the grief non Romany families have brought to their doors

I forgot.. Very quick and easy way to tell...
A Romany will not have any water in the van.. It is considered dirty.
Washing is done outside the vans and they will have a dedicated toilet area ( with or without facilities that you and I would recognise

It is also rare for Romany families to leave piles of crap every where, as there is considerable family pride and honour to be kept up.
Leaving a mess or causing local problems is frowned upon simply because they do want want THEIR family name to be associated with such things..

Puddleduck, if you go that way again ask what family they are.. It will ingratiate you with them and you will see the pride they take in their name :-)

Was it not last year the CofE pledged to let "travellers" use CofE land to stop on ? Wonder if that plan has come to fruition ? Blue Knight you could point these "travellers" towards the local Church, see what reception they get.

I take the point about TRUE Roma Peoples. But the Nasty fact of life is they too are in a Minority. LA`s, have one hell of a time clearing up after the Majority of these "Itinerants" (Jim Banned the "P" word). The last time HULL cleaned up one of it`s Parks after such an "infestation" The Guys clearing up found sufficient Used Drug paraphernalia to fill a small skip (slight exaggeration ) but they did need specialist equipment and containers. THAT is becoming one of the more concerning issues, the tendency now to deal drugs, and then move on. Would you want your Kid`s or Grand kids Playing in the Park after that lot?. YORK, had more than 20 Romanian Reg (Ro) Vans Parked on the riveside Car/Coach Park for over a week back last May!. when they left there was excrement and rubbish despite the fact that there was a skip on the site.

There is too much surmising going on there for me to be concerned. We don't KNOW they will refrain from paying for parking slots. Townsfolk FEEL intimidated says more about THEM. Have they actually BEEN intimidated?

A town council man knocked and moved me on from parking in a side road next to Topps Tiles, where I had spent money, because local people felt 'intimidated' by motorhomes being parked up in case it is a traveller. Doh! I am probably the least intimidating Funster on here.. mind you I had my 3 year old grandaughter with me .. maybe she scared the beegeebies out of the locals!!!!!

I often find that people are not always concerned when it's not on their doorstep.

Also, you're probably correct about the car park payment too; i.e. they'll most likely pay the £1,200 'day-only fee' for their 5-day stint as a good will gesture to show that travelling folk always pay their way.

Oh but I DO get concerned ... but have seen too many newsreports where kneejerk reactions escalate a situation.

These people, as yet, have not threatened anyone or left drug needles or rubbish lying around .. yet already those are some of the problems thrown in their court. Chances are that they don't particularly want to stay there long term .. it is a small area .. the council will need to act in a calm way NOT incited .. or ignited .. by local people about what MAY happen.

Market Deeping, down the road has just enjoyed a visit from a small number of these bloody pik3ys......

This is just a partial list of what they got up to during their short stay:

Breaking into a primary school during Friday break time
Attempting to forcibly kiss young girls on the playground
Chasing boys in an attempt to fight them,
Attempting to steal a teachers phone (she managed to wrestle him to the ground to recover her phone)
Children will be kept at home on Monday for fear of their safety at school.
Defecating on The Bull floor,
Running out on an £80 tab in the Stage
Running out on a hair cut at DJ Barbers
Intimidation and threats made to many members of the public, including shop owners who work alone
Thefts from Tesco
Thefts from people taking their Tesco shopping to their car
Damage to the Madcaps centre
Thefts from many back gardens
Driving while holding a baby
Almost running people over who were using a zebra crossing (they got out of the way just in time)
Prowling the streets Saturday afternoon chasing young girls in attempts to sexually assault them.
Damage to private and public property.
Blocking McDonalds DriveThru until they were given free food
Stealing 2 horseboxes & one trailer
Stealing, stripping & wrecking a Discovery

...one arrest

My Mum's family is part Romany but a long time back. I have some the names and connections but would like to know more :) Being interested in family history I did ask "the store family" about any possible connections and we had a nice long chat. 20 years or so ago I worked for a man (who I now know was a very very distant cousin) and kept all the paperwork for the family vehicles in order, they were Romany and every vehicle was legal. We did have quite a discussion about payment - they wanted to pay me in advance and I didn't want that so we settled on day payment as a compromise.

Now THAT'S when the anger rightly should step in and every law broken paid in full.

The upsetting and frightening thing to me there is that the children are seeingbit as the norm .. what will they grow up doing if not stopped now by DRASTIC action. . I don't want to say what goes through my mind. Teaching them this is the way to live is actually abuse of a kind.

In strict terms you are correct. However, I suggest than the more likely outcome will be Non Payment, Loads of Rubbish and Excrement left behind. And Height Barriers erected to stop it happening again. Thereby excluding the likes of You and I. Watch this space!.

Are you sure it’s a council car park and not the C&MC? - they’re all lined up neatly but I can’t see the marker peg!

I have many happy memories of that carpark.

Taking my children there on a Sunday morning, visiting the adjacent market, then buying freshly-landed fish from boats near the centre of Redcar.
Sitting in the MH with my dad (now in a care home with dementia), eating fish and chips whilst watching wind-surfers and horse-riders on the beach.

Sadly, Redcar is not a well-off area and costs associated with any problems is something that local residents will not want to bear.
