We usually go to France in early July but It looks as if our only chance to get to away this year may be very late July/early August.

We come from a caravanning background and prefer to stay on municipal type sites but with our new Campervan would like to try one or two aires as well.

We’d prefer not to book but follow the weather charts ...

Is this possible in August, or do we need to rethink?

I am sure there will be Aires with spaces in some parts but I also think you would be very lucky to get on an Aire of any worth in August, and sites as you probably know are mega bucks during end July through to 3rd week of August.

Never had a problem. Use Pitch up and Camper contact, be flexible where you go and as you said, chase the sun.

Not sure about Aires, been on a few but prefer the facilities of pool/bar/showers etc..

It depends where you want to go . We were away in July and August last year and had no problem but we weren’t on the coast preferring the mountains.

Never had an issue finding space on an aire and even used a couple of campsites, again spaces no problem.

Avoid the coastal areas and you will be fine.

There is so much to see inland that you won’t be disappointed.

Edit.

One point.

In August it would be wise to arrive before 1600hrs on a Campsite if you haven’t booked. After that arrivals can be thick and fast.

Rock up at aires early and you should be ok most of the time.
I stayed on a site in Annecy that we use quite often but hadn’t booked.
Turned up on the off chance and got a lakeside pitch, that was the middle of August.

For many years had to go in August because of kids. Never booked and never had problems. Always avoided the coast though, as we live on the coast don't seek it on holiday. Prefer mountains which we don't have at home.

Don't come down our way without booking, July and August here you'll be lucky to find a parking place for a pushbike .... bloody tourists ... can't move for 'em

If you fancy the area in the Limousin near to Limoge then we know the sites and aires that will not be a problem in August, you just need to ask.

Thanks, Limousin is definitely an option as is Burgundy.

We have been to France in the second half of August for the last two years and not had any problems finding space on aires. I realise you will be going earlier than that but I think you will be OK.
Just keep away from popular seaside places and you should be fine.

Richard.

The main French holiday month lasts from Bastille Day (on 14 July) so in 2019 that's Saturday 13 July to Saturday August 17th.

We always go to france in august wife works in school only once not got on aire because full. We always head for south coast using aires on the way but pre book main stay on a site

Thanks for all your replies. They’ve given me the confidence that we’ll be ok to tour ... I like to move on after 2-3 nights in one place

Never had a problem that time of year. Use all the afore mentioned apps, we tend to favour Park 4 Night and aim to arrive on an aire around late morning to early afternoon. Enjoy your trip
