When we first visited the UK in 1973 we rented a motor caravan and started at the Chertsey Caravan Club (near London) and traveled up to Scotland. What I remember is the unusual ferry at Ballachulish that had a rotating deck. Am I dreaming or was there such a creature and is it still there?

Good morning,

The Ballachulish ferry is no more it's been replaced by a bridge.

The ferry I remember was an old war time landing craft, we used it in the summer of 1970, we had a caravan in those days. :Eeek:

I'm confused - what has the Cromarty ferry got to do with Ballachulish?

You're quite right. It was a barge like affair with the deck on a pivot. There's a picture of it here

Don,
Thanks for your reply. Was the reason for the unique deck , the fact that this "ship" could not dock bow first? If you don't mind, I'll think up somemore questions about the UK to revisit my memories of the great times my wife and I had during our several caravan trips there.
I gather you have quite a few years of RVing under your belt. We have been RVing since 1969 and before that we spent 4 summers in a rented a cabin cruiser on the Rideau Waterway in Ontario, Canada. So. I guess we both are old hands at this .

Oh I see. I thought you were saying the Cromarty ferry was the one (or like it) that used to be the Ballachulish ferry, but it didn't look like it to me.

But now I see that it's now the Kylerhrea ferry.
